To start, a Mobi-Mat beach access mat on the sand allows visitors to roll on the sand in their own everyday wheelchair. The Mobi-Mat is 5-feet-wide and extends all the way from the sidewalk to down near the water. As if that isnt cool enough, two amphibious beach wheelchairs are available at Bicentennial Park. With these special beach wheelchairs, you can actually float in the water while feeling the breeze. To use one of the amphibious beach wheelchairs during your visit, call 561-707-9015 before you arrive and let them know when you will be there. Sarasota might possibly be one of the overlooked vacation destinations for visitors who are not totally familiar with Florida tourism destinations. The downtown area is gorgeous, filled with so many restaurants and charming little shops. Its on the water, so theres always a nice breeze coming from the Gulf to keep temps down. For an afternoon of shopping, you can head over to St. Armands Circle, and grab a bite at the Columbia Restaurant, one of the historic locations designated in Florida.
Siesta Key is home to one of the nicest accessible beaches in Florida. It has a Mobi Mat, beach wheelchairs available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and easily accessible restrooms. The world-renowned Ringling Museum is located in Sarasota, and is home to one of the most distinguished art and cultural collections in the United States. For a wildlife adventure, you can head over to Myakka State Park and take a ride on an accessible airboat where youre pretty much guaranteed to see alligators, waterbirds, and maybe even a few wild boars.

Key West Tropical And Botanical Garden
Another great place to get outdoors and enjoy nature is at the Key West Tropical and Botanical Garden. Spread across 15 acres, this is the only frost-free, natural conservation habitat, botanical garden in the continental U.S.
There were paved and boardwalk paths all throughout the garden and all trails were six to ten feet wide. It was easy to navigate as a wheelchair user and I was able to have perfect views of the native flora and fauna. Most of the garden was accessible, but there were a couple areas that I couldnt access. Id say that about 80-90% of the garden was wheelchair friendly and for only $10 per adult, its definitely worth it.
My favorite area was the lake, which was quite large. There were benches around the lake, so it was nice to just relax for a while and see the lake surrounded by all of the flora and fauna.

Watching a gorgeous sunset while dining on ultra fresh seafood is one of the favorite pastimes in this southernmost city in the United States. At the tip of the Florida Keys and at the end of US Highway 1, Key West is packed with sights and attractions. It boasts a long seafaring and naval tradition since it is situated right at the Gateway to the Caribbean. Key West, also known as the Conch Republic, has a distinct Caribbean feel, with Old Quarter streets lined with palms, tropical plants, and adorable painted wooden colonial houses.
Key West is one of the US cruise ship ports, which means the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to all the stores, restaurants, bathrooms, and attractions in Key West. There, however, are several historic sites and buildings which cant be modified due to their historic status, but Key West is over-all compact and easy to navigate for wheelchair users. Hemingway Home And Museum
To be honest, Im not a huge fan of Hemingways work, but his Key West home should be a must-visit for everyone! As one of the most well-known writers ever, its pretty awesome to see where he lived and worked for more than ten years of his life.
My visit started in the garden area, where there were fairly smooth paths throughout. Some areas did have some thick gravel, which I managed to easily roll over in my powered wheelchair, but some wheelchairs may have a bit of difficulty in the gravel. Overall, the gardens were gorgeous and really accessible for me.
The most interesting things that I saw in the gardens at the Hemingway Home & Museum were all of the cats. There are dozens of cats on the grounds and many of them are polydactyl, meaning that they have six toes on one paw. They were so cute, but seemed to be a bit fearful of my wheelchair, so they kept running away from me. Eventually, I managed to get pretty close to a few of the cats though.
After exploring outside for a while, I headed inside the house. Only the lower level is wheelchair accessible, but I was able to watch a short movie about Ernest Hemingways life and the home. It was incredibly interesting to learn about him and the movie did a great job of showing the parts of the house that I couldnt get to in my wheelchair.

A 187-acre park, this is truly your chance to get away. Since itâs so big, not all of its trails are wheelchair accessible, but the park does offer partial access for wheelchair users. You will want to avoid the natural surface nature trail along the parkâs western edge, but the paved bike bath that encircles the park in a 2.4 mile loop is a fine choice for wheelchair users. There are many bathrooms located along the bike path, and you can even stop by a farm if youâre an animal lover.
Morikami Museum And Japanese Gardens
Located in Delray Beach, the perfectly designed Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens sits on 16 acres and includes two museum buildings with expansive Japanese gardens. Here, you can roll along smooth paths with resting areas while viewing world-class bonsai collections, lakes with koi and wildlife. This spectacular display of beauty is one of The Palm Beaches most treasured cultural attractions. The museum includes works of art featuring different aspects of Japans rich and diverse culture. There are also three exhibition galleries, a 225-seat theater, an authentic tea house with viewing gallery and classrooms. Just being here gives you a robust appreciation for Japanese culture. You may also want to visit the on-site Cornell Cafe. This open-air cafe offers panoramic views of the gardens and serves Pan-Asian cuisines. Morikami is closed on Mondays and major holidays, so plan your experience here accordingly.

Mennello Museum Of Art
The Mennello Museum of Art is home to a permanent collection of works by Earl Cunningham. Other exhibitions change from time to time, and the outdoor sculpture garden is always open to the public. There are many events hosted through the months including tours, family fun days, and weekend specials. The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays with admission ranging from free to $5 per person depending on age.
The Mennello Museum of Art is handicap accessible, starting with the driveway. The circular driveway allows for curbside drop-offs and pickups, with free parking in the adjacent lot. The front has a covered porch with a ramp and stairs to access the main entry. Throughout the Sculpture Garden, there is a paved pathway which is also a great place to observe the lake. Wheelchairs are available upon request and are free of charge.
Sunset Celebration At Mallory Square
Every single night that I was in Key West, I attended the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. It is a nightly celebration, where everyone comes together to wrap up another beautiful day. The sunsets in Key West are incredible and completely worth celebrating.
Visitors start arriving at Mallory Square about two hours before sunset to kick off the festivities and claim a nice spot to watch the sunset. In the couple hours leading up to the sunset, various performers and vendors fill the square. You can find everything from a tarot card reader to a magician and people selling artwork and homemade goods. Its a fun environment!
The main area at Mallory Square was great in the time leading up to the sunset, but my favorite place to actually watch the sun go down was at Bistro 245. Bistro 245 is an outdoor restaurant at the Margaritaville Resort & Marina , and its located only a two-minute walk/roll from all of the action in Mallory Square. I preferred Bistro 245 because it was a lot less crowded during these COVID-times.

Cornell Fine Arts Museum
You can knock out two attractions in one trip by visiting this museum, which is located on the beautiful and historic campus of Rollins College. With some of the oldest art complementing the contemporary, the Cornell Fine Arts Museumhas one of Floridaâs best art collections without a doubt. Visiting is free, and visitors can park adjacent to the museum or in the SunTrust Plaza Parking Garage, where accessible parking is available. The museum itself, like much of the college campus, is wheelchair accessible.
South Inlet Park Boca Raton
Located in the city of Boca Raton is South Inlet Park, an off-the-beaten-path park that is rarely crowded with beachgoers. This is a beautiful and relaxed oceanfront park that includes a nice, sandy beach, multiple barbecue pits, picnic areas, and a playground. This is a perfect spot to bring the family and spend the entire day, as there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. The parks manual beach wheelchair is free to use and is available by contacting a lifeguard on a first-come, first-served basis.

Explore The Jn Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service manages the National Wildlife Refuge System, which contains more than 500 refuges that comprise more than 150 million acres. Shockingly, I believe the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is actually the first of these protected lands that I have visited , and its a great one!
The refuge, located on Sanibel Island, is 5,200 acres in size and is named in honor of the cartoonist Jay Norwood Ding Darling, who is credited with initiating the Federal Duck Stamp program, which funds the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund. Naturally, the museum at the Darling NWR contains an exhibit on the Duck Stamp program, as well as numerous other exhibits of interest concerning wildlife and natural habitats.
Outdoors, the refuge contains a wheelchair accessible trail with a wooden boardwalk a feature, I was told, that will soon be extended. The varied habitats along the trail expose visitors to the beauty of Floridas forests and wetlands, and provide a unique learning experience for all.
The cost of admission to the refuge is $10 per vehicle or $1 per pedestrian or bicyclist. Free entry is available to those who hold the National Park Service Access Pass for disabled people. To learn more or plan your visit, see the refuge website.
