Waco Mammoth National Monument
Waco, Texas is home to the largest concentration of Columbian mammoths remains in any one single paleontological site.
The 24 mammoths are believed to have died after getting trapped in a canal during a flash food starting 68,000 years ago. Other animals, including a saber-toothed cat and a camel, were also buried as a result of flash floods later on.
The excavation site, which sits next to the Bosque River, has been opened to the public since 2009.
