Things To Do In West Virginia: Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

West Virginia | Things to Do and See

Visitors will feel as though they’ve been transported back in history to an era of steam locomotives when visiting Cass, home to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. This meticulously preserved mountain town features charming company houses repurposed into tourist accommodations, restored buildings housing the museum and company store, and the train depot.

During its glory days, the 1901 Cass Scenic Railroad was used in the logging industry, hauling logs from Canada to a lumber mill in Cass. The same steam-driven Shay trains from that period now transport tourists instead of logs. Visitors hopping aboard this excursion will be enthralled by the unparalleled views.

Drive to Charles Town for a good time at the Bloomery Plantation Distillery, well-known in West Virginia for their natural fruit cordials. Housed in a log cabin distillery dating back to the 1840s, the Bloomery Plantation Distillery only uses farm-fresh ingredients grown in the area. You can taste authentic flavors in their cordials and cocktails. And with the distillery located along the banks of the Shenandoah River with the Blue Ridge Mountains not far behind, its a great place to enjoy a nice cocktail.

Fun Things To Do In West Virginia

I am on a quest! A quest to see all 50 states before I turn 50 inspired by Melody over at Wherever I May Roam. Some people thinks checklists are silly, but I think its celebratory and fun to attempt any sort of quest. They also can lead to adventures that you otherwise wouldnt have thought of. I had to drive to Washington DC for my grandfathers funeral. You can read about my top ten things to do in DC or about 3 fabulous day trips from Washington DC. We had a few free days and realized two of the states I had left to visit were in road trip distance, so off exploring we went to explore West Virginia and Kentucky. The result is a list of fun things to do with kids in West Virginia, which can easily work for adults as well.

Washington was known to have numerous physical conditions that could have been lessened by visiting the hot springs frequently. The existing spring today is a replica of what the bathing pool would have looked like at the time of Washington’s visit.

    Camp At Summersville Lake

One of my favorite seasonal activities in West Virginia was taking our boat to Summersville Lake and camping nearby. This man-made freshwater lake is formed by a rockfill dam and can be up to 327 feet deep in some parts. The incredible rock cliffs line the lake make for excellent bass, catfish, and walleye fishing. Summersville Lake has plenty of camping sites, boats, and cabins available to rent.

One Of The Worlds Ugliest Buildings

Some might call it ugly, but we canât deny the fact that the Markel Building stands out because of its unique design, which many people describe as âa foil-wrapped potato.â It was built by architect Haig Jamgochian in 1962 as the headquarters of the Markel Corporation. Envisioned to be a futuristic-inspired structure, its exterior is wrapped in a 555-foot-long piece of solid aluminum that was sledge-hammered to create a crinkled effect. In 2009, the Markel Building was declared as one of the 10 ugliest buildings in the world by the Digital Journal.
