St Johns Episcopal Church

At a time in the 1770s, tensions free between Great Britain and the colonies. Virginia held a series of meetings to gather its protests against the nation.

In Second Virginia Convention , held at the then Henrico Parish Church, Patrick Henry stirred up the spirit of the Revolution with his words, Give me liberty or give me death!

Amongst the delegates were George Washington, Peyton Randolph, Thomas Jefferson, and other respected Virginians.

Hence, St. Johns Church in Richmond, Virginia, ranks as one of the most important historic sites in America, where these delegates made a decision that transformed the history of America.

Motivated by Patrick Henrys strong argument, that voice has been on continuous reverberation in America.

Even if you arent staying the night, you can be pampered at their spa or enjoy a glass of bubbly in their majestic lobby. Patrons have included thirteen United States presidents, famous writers, and celebrities, including the likes of Henry James, Charles Lindbergh, The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, and Anthony Hopkins, among many others!

Also, make sure you check out Lemaire on the second floor for a little bit of an upscale happy hour experience. Featuring a wine list of over 200 offerings and some great appetizers to nibble on, Lemaire is a great spot to kick back for some drinks with yummy appetizers!

And this may sound weird, but dont miss the alligators! Back in the early 1900s, alligators lived in the fountain just outside of the main doors. The real, live alligators are long gone from The Jefferson Hotel, for obvious reasons, but a bronze statue remains near the main hotel entrance in their honor!

Explore A Richmond Neighborhood

Richmond is full of unique neighborhoods, many of them connected by driving and walking trails that highlight history. The Richmond Slave Trail follows the port and slave markets that made Richmond the largest source of enslaved Africans on the east coast of America from 1830 to 1860. The 6.2-mile Richmond Liberty Trail connects many historic sites and is marked with a blue logo painted on the sidewalk.

Shockoe Slip is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, where restaurants, bars, and shops line the cobblestone streets. Drive or walk through the Fan District to see beautiful 19th and 20th-century architecture on quiet residential streets. At the western edge of the Fan, Carytown is a fun street lined with quirky shops and tasty food.

Jackson Ward, a National Landmark Historic District, was one of the most important black neighborhoods in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Stop at Broad and Brook Streets to learn about Maggie L. Walker, a leader in the African-American community and the first female bank president in the US.

Some of you have read this blog long enough to remember how much I disliked Richmond when I first moved there in 2010. It took awhile for the city to blossom, but today there are a ton of things to do in Richmond VA not to mention it has a brilliant personality and vibrant neighborhoods that make it an excellent travel destination.

After living in Richmond for eight years , Ive experienced the city through the eyes of a local. I know the must-see spots for first-time travelers as well as a few secrets that only residents know about. Youll want to check out the best of downtown Richmond when you visit, but there are also a few places to head further afield.

Although I no longer live in Richmond, I returned in May 2021 for a week and still have friends and family there whove clued me into whats new and fabulous. This post has been updated with a few new experiences as well as classic favorites!

    The museum is located in one of the citys oldest buildings which is thought to have been visited by Poe in his youth.

    • Lunch. or Supper! is a fun and funky diner on Summit Ave. Try the tasty shrimp and grits or the fried catfish.
    • Stella’s Grocery is a casual spot to pick up a meal in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood. They offer seating inside and on the porch if you want to eat on site.
    • We also had a nice Cubano sandwich at Urban Farmhouse Market & Cafe and they have multiple locations in Richmond.

    Vietnamese food may not be everyones cup of tea, but it would be a huge disservice not to mention Mekong Restaurant.

    Mekong is a very popular Vietnamese restaurant about 5-10 minutes outside of downtown Richmond. The inside of the restaurant is spacious, but not too fancy.

    They offer delicious traditional Vietnamese meals with a huge selection of beers from their in-house brewery, The Answer.

    Carytown is the top shopping destination in Richmond for local boutiques and stores and was coined as the Mile of Style. On this small nine-block stretch of Cary Street, youll be amazed at how many options there are for shopping and dining. Most of the shops in Carytown are open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Saturday, and 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sundays.

    Boasting an interesting collection of trinkets and inappropriate greeting cards, Mongrel is one of our favorite shops in Carytown .

    With more than 25 restaurants and a local brewery/urban winery combination, you will be able to refuel and recharge after a day of shopping. Grab a seat at a table by the window and get your people-watching on!

    We suggest trying lunch at the New York Deli or munching on some tasty sweets at For the Love of Chocolate. If you are up for a dive bar & diner, Galaxy Diner has been in Carytown since Samantha was a child and she still raves about the great milkshakes!

    The Byrd just drips with history and has played thousands of movies over the years and even hosts the Richmond French Film Festival every year, too.

    Most movie theaters charge $10+ for a movie ticket, BUT the Byrds ticket price of $4 is a steal, especially considering the relatively new releases they screen! On Saturdays, the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ is played throughout the day before showtimes by the house organist. Super cool, and local, experience and is a must-do when looking for things to do in Richmond, VA.

    Stroll Through Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

    The beautiful 50-acre gem of a garden was once the hunting grounds of the Powhatan. Today, you can stroll the pathways and marvel at all the beautiful flowering plants inside the 63-feet-tall domed conservatory as well as in the gardens outside.

    Be sure to visit Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden often throughout the year for special garden events like the Butterflies LIVE program in the summer, during Halloween for Goblins and Gourds, and the GardenFest of Lights from Thanksgiving through early January.

    The teahouse and café make the perfect place to get a refreshing drink or lunch when exploring the botanical gardens. The garden shop has a variety of plants to entice you into beginning or adding to your garden.

    Children will also have fun exploring the gardens, especially those designed specifically for children. In the Childrens Garden, they can play in the water-play area and cool off on hot days or climb into the treehouse and view the gardens from above.

    Outside, you will find rose gardens where you can see and smell more than 70 different roses, the Asian Valley dedicated solely to Asian plants, and the Cherry Tree Walk, which bursts into bloom each spring.

    Hike The Texas Beach Trail At James River Park

    The leafy trails of Texas Beach offer some of the nicest hikes in the city. Situated on the North bank of the James River, the Texas Beach trails run for a couple of miles through forest and rocky river bank terrain.

    The area is also home to the Treasure Island Community Skatepark and has access points to the river.

    The large flat rocks in the area are the ideal place to take a picnic or sunbathe next to the gently flowing water. Texas Beach is definitely worth a visit during your time in Richmond.

    Babes of Carytown This LGBTQ+ friendly establishment is the number one spot for dancing on Friday and Saturday nights in Richmond. The dance floor is always crowded with people while the DJ plays the hottest hits all night long. There is a cash only cover charge to get in, so come prepared and make sure you arrive early, because the later the night gets, the longer the line gets too.

    Tobacco and Company If youre looking for a night out on the town after dinner, head to Tobacco and Company for a fun night of dancing. Their basement bar and dance floor is a popular location for nightly dancing. They play the greatest hits from the past three decades, so theres something for everyone to groove to. Weekends get pretty crowded at this bar, so make sure you get a spot in line before its too late.

    New York Deli New York Deli is one of my favorite spots in the city. This restaurant and bar is located in the heart of Carytown and they have a delicious selection of food, large selection of craft beers and cocktails, karaoke, trivia, and dancing. Dancing at this bar is reserved for Friday and Saturday nights and theres no cover charge. The dance floor is always packed wall to wall with people ready to get down and boogie, so bring your dancing shoes and all your friends!
