Things To Do In Holland Michigan That Include Beaches

Now that weve taken a good hard look at Big Red, we can talk about Hollands world-class beautiful beaches. The best part of Lake Michigan is that it is unsalted and shark-free! We are spoiled here with a lake that looks like the ocean but doesnt burn the tongue when jumping in!

Of course, if youre terrified of sharks, Lake Michigan is the place to be with not a shark to be found! But be careful, our beaches, with their soft sand and bright sunshine, are gorgeous and addictive. Be sure to bring your sunscreen and plan to stay a while!

There is so much to see and do as I discovered on my recent visit. Even just walking through the downtown area and seeing the many beautiful tulip blooms is a wonderful experience during Tulip Time.

I also walked down to the Window on the Waterfront park, which has come alive with tulips in so many different colors and varieties. Everywhere you look there is color. Plus the scenic overlook lets you get a beautiful view of Lake Macatawa.

1. Laketown Beach

The first free thing to do in Holland is visit Laketown Beach, one of my favorite beaches in all of Michigan. I found out about this beach through word of mouth from a coworker. While its beautiful to visit at any time of year, my favorite time to explore Laketown Beach is late winter/early spring. During late winter, youre likely to be the only person on the beach. Its also possible to walk a few miles along the waters edge without worrying about bumping into anyone else.

But beware! There are a lot of steps to climb or sand to traverse both to get to the beach and back.

2. Explore Downtown Holland

Check out a few of the over 100 unique and locally owned shops, restaurants, and galleries. Be sure to check out the giant wooden shoes outside the Visit Holland office! And if youre visiting on a chilly day, warm up by the fire!

Windmill Island Gardens Holland Michigan

After visiting the Windmill Island Gardens and seeing the 251-year-old windmill De Zwaan, you might think you somehow got transported to the Netherlands. In fact, it is the only real, working Dutch windmill in the States that was transported from the Netherlands to Holland in 1964. Today, it is the centerpiece of a magnificent garden on Windmill Island, which becomes a magical place in May when more than 100,000 tulips bloom in all the colors of rainbow.

The 36-acre island in the Macatawa River is a popular tourist destination, and besides the windmill, it also contains a colorful old-fashioned carousel that kids love. If you are wondering what to do in Holland, this is a great place to visit. Stroll about the island, where there is always something blooming and, during the summer, you can enjoy kids dancing traditional Dutch dances in wooden clogs.
