Play Like The Colonists
You can start your day by literally dressing the part! Costumes are available for rent in the visitor’s center gift shop for kids, and we saw a fair number of kids walking through the streets in full colonial dress. My kids opted out of that idea- but my youngest definitely wanted a tri-cornered hat!
During our visit, the Powell House was open for tours, and we learned about how families lived during this period, and the early age in which they started their apprenticeships for their future vocations . We watched someone prepare a traditional family meal over an open fire, and we had the chance to play traditional games in the side yard.
And of course, you can’t miss the photo ops!
We visited the armory, the jail , and we couldn’t resist the photo op in the stocks! And there were many chances just to see and interact with colonists as they went about their day- such as this esteemed gentleman on horseback!
White Oak Lavender Farm
In contrast to these exciting events, a visit to White Oak Lavender Farm is always a laidback affair as you immerse yourself in nature and enjoy some wonderful wines. At the idyllic site outside of Harrisonburg, you can buy sweet-smelling lavender products and walk around fields full of purple flowers.
Now one of Virginias premier lavender destinations, the family owned and operated farm is situated in a scenic spot in the Shenandoah Valley. During summertime, you can tour its colorful fields and see how they grow, distill and clean the flower buds before picking some stems to take home.

Bassett Hall was the home of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and his wife Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, and visitors can take a guided tour of this classic home and its surrounding gardens. The 18th-century home of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller was built by a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. A 15-minute film sets the background, and a visit to the Rockefellers’ home gives a perspective on the family that made Colonial Williamsburg possible. Be sure to visit the extensive flower gardens.
Another fine example of one of Williamsburg’s oldest houses is the Brush-Everard House, restored to its 1773 state and authentically furnished to illustrate the life of Thomas Everard, an apprentice who rose to become a planter and community leader. The home is especially known for its beautifully crafted staircase with carved stair brackets and turned balustrades. You can also see the original kitchen and smokehouse.

The Jamestown Glasshouse is one of the main attractions from America’s first colony. In the early days of Jamestown, officials believed that glassmaking could be a profitable venture. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
Just off the Eastern Shore of Virginia is another excellent place to head if youre after spellbinding scenery and nature: the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Best known for its wild ponies, its pristine beaches and forests, marshes and dunes occupy the southern half of Assateague Island.
As it was originally established in 1943 to protect migratory birds, the park is very much a paradise for birdwatchers with untold thousands visiting each year. Impressively enough, over 320 species of shorebird and waterfowl inhabit its untouched forests, wetlands and Atlantic Ocean coastline.
