When Is The Rainy Season In Seattle

But doesnt it rain there all the time? That is the question we got a lot when we decided to move to Seattle and told our family and friends. We, similar to most people, had this vision in our heads of nonstop pouring rain for months on end. But after living in Seattle for three years were going to let you in on a little secret: its actually not that bad!The rain in Seattle is more like a drizzle. Its light enough that you can walk outside with just a rain jacket . We were expecting thunderstorms and torrential downpours like we had in Texas. But it is a much lighter, misty type rain, with the occasional heavier rainstorm.Sure, after an epic summer of outdoor adventures, the months of gloom can be a bit frustrating and depressing, but with a positive attitude, it really isnt as bad as everyone says!Seattle gets about 37.5 inches of rain a year. Cities like Houston and Atlanta actually get way more inches of rain per year than Seattle, so even though there may be more rainy days in Seattle, its a lot less rain overall. The rainy season in Seattle typically runs from . June through September are usually the sunnier months, with the very occasional rainy day, but once it hits the fall, the chances of rain gets a lot higher. As winter arrives, you can expect very few sunny days, but as it hits spring, the chances of having a sunny day starts to go up again.

Fun Things To Do In Seattle This Weekend: Chihuly Garden And Glass

The best things to do in West Seattle, including Alki ...

Even if you dont have a lot of spare time during your visit to Seattle, you should definitely pencil in a trip to Chihuly Garden and Glass. It is a long-term exhibition by artist Dale Chihuly that opened in 2012 at Seattle Center. Chihulys work is magical there is simply no other way to describe it. He plays with glass, light, and the imagination of viewers by creating compelling and dream-like art pieces. He designed the art space specifically for this exhibition. Visit eight galleries to see Chihulys comprehensive art collection, and keep in mind that the culmination of your visit will be the Glasshouse.

It is a 4,500-square feet space filled with lights, colors, and an enormous, out-of-this-world 100-foot tall suspended sculpture in reds, yellows, oranges, and amber, made of thousands of individual pieces. When you go out to the garden, the magic continues. Chihuly planted his Crystal and Icicle Towers and Reeds on Logs among real, breathing scarlet daylilies, crimson camellias, dogwoods, fuchsias, and many trees. Youll never want to leave.

Bill Speidels Underground Tour

Source:

On June 6 1889 a cabinet-maker accidentally ignited a glue pot, and the ensuing Great Seattle Fire wiped out 31 blocks.

One upshot was that the reconstructed citys streets were re-graded one to two storeys higher than the original city streets.

This helped keep the central Pioneer Square dry, as it had been built on mudflat, and prevented toilets from backing up at high tide.

It also left a cavernous subterranean space where the old storefronts used to be.

Its exciting to explore the forgotten city, but youll also be told lots of humorous anecdotes about Seattles earthy and roguish pioneers.

Tours set off on the hour every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

The tour is named for its founder, self-taught historian Bill Speidel who helped to preserve and restore Seattles original city centre at Pioneer Square in the 1960s.

A short drive south to Boeing Field in Tukwila is the largest independent air and space museum in the world.

In a city with Seattles aviation pedigree, its a trip not to pass up, especially because the central T.A. Wilson Great Gallery is a jaw-dropping steel and glass construction.

This vast space holds scores of aircraft, many suspended from the ceiling.

One of these is the Gossamer Albatross II, the backup aircraft for the first human-powered flight across the English Channel.

Theres a cockpit from a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and a de Havilland Comet, the worlds first jetliner.

Places To Visit In Seattle: Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Housed in what was formerly the historic Cadillac Hotel, the Seattle Unit of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park is located on Second Avenue within the Pioneer Square Historic District. The Visitor Center contains indoor displays and exhibits. Perhaps it is surprising, but there are no outdoor areas of this park, which makes it different from most of the other National Park Service parks.

The exhibits show visitors how people in the past left everything to travel to the Yukon in search of gold. The park offers summer programs such as gold mining and panning techniques and park movies such as Seattle Gateway to the Goldfields and Gold Fever Race to the Klondike.

Blake Island is only accessible by boat, and for those without their own vessel, Argosy Cruises offers a solution. Normally the Blake Island Longhouse is filled with native dancing, singing, and storytelling. The experience is truly awesome for those with kids old enough to value the history found within these walls. Currently, these performances are on hold due to Covid, however, there is still a lot to do on the island from wine tasting to kayaking to just walking around. There is lots of wildlife to enjoy here, including wild deer that roam the island peacefully.

Parking: Anywhere near the market there are many lots and garages.Estimated time to explore Pike Place Market with kids: 3-6 hoursA must-see spot for every Seattle tourist. Locals simply call it Pike Place and you will immediately set yourself apart as a tourist when you add an unneeded s to the nameit is not Pikes Place as it is commonly called. This historic market is home to the first Starbucks and, of course, the famous Flying Fish, but there is so much more to see at this nine-acre marketplace. There are oodles of delicious food options: my favorite way to eat here is to grab a little something from lots of different stalls. The flower market and produce stands are also fantastic and easy to locate on the main floor.

Below are some must-see highlights that are a bit less obvious to find, but absolutely worth visiting, on your day at the market!
