Walk through Indianas oldest city, where territory officials made decisions that changed the future of the entire Midwest. Tour different buildings including the original Territory Capitol building, which was built in 1805, the Jefferson Academy the first school of higher learning in the state the Elihu Stout Print Shop, Fort Knox II, the Old French House and more.
The original Territory Capitol Building
Tour the original territorial capitol, which is considered the oldest major government building in the Midwest. The Red House was one of three buildings rented by the legislature from 1805 to 1813 and was the meeting place of the legislature in 1811, after the Battle of Tippecanoe. Built in 1805 as a tailor shop, the Red House is a small two-story building, its heavy timber frame held together with wooden pegs. In 1813, the territorial government moved to Corydon, which became Indianas first state capital when Indiana became a state in 1816.

Fort Knox II
Fort Knox II Site was an important military outpost used by the United States Army from 1803 to 1813. Captain Zachary Taylor strengthened Fort Knox with a stockade in 1811. Governor William Henry Harrison mustered his army at Fort Knox II and marched up the Wabash River to the Battle of Tippecanoe at Prophetstown on Nov. 7, 1811.

Things To Do In Vincennes Indiana: Ouabache Trails Park
Ouabache Trails Park is a large recreational area in Knox County. Wabash Trails Park is Lined with picturesque nature trails and crisscrossed with small streams that empty into the Wabash River. It is a peaceful spot for family outings and overnight camping.
Amenities in the 250-acre park include four rental cabins, 35 campsites with electric hookups, nine tent sites, and one primitive campground. There are bathrooms and showers on the property as well as picnic areas for daytime visitors. Pets are allowed on the campgrounds but not in the private cabins.

Windy Knoll Winery is a family-run business that opened for business in June 2002. Making wine began as a hobby for Rick and Gwen Lesser. Their couple’s vineyard started with 32 grapevines and eventually expanded to 700 grapevines. Today, the vineyard sprawls over 37 acres of rolling hills in Vincennes. The grapes are used to produce 10 different types of wines.
Wines from Windy Knoll have stood up to national and international competitors in the Indy State Fair Wine Competition, which is the largest domestic and international wine event in the United States. Windy Knoll’s wines are available for purchase in-person at the winery or online for Indiana residents.

Things To Do In Vincennes Indiana: The Rainbow Beach Aquatics Center
Rainbow Beach Aquatics Center is a family-friendly adventure park that began as an artificial beach in 1936. The pool attached to the beach was renovated in 1971. Additions at that time included a 50-meter competition lap pool as well as a diving board tower with three levels. In 2014, Rainbow Beach once again underwent major renovations since management found that Vincennes citizens were traveling to aquatics centers in other communities.
After months of hard work and help from sponsors, the aquatics center now contains a large water slide, covered lounging areas with beach chairs, a play area for kids, and a spacious bathhouse. Visitors can reserve the pool for birthday parties, corporate events, and other special occasions.

Named after Francois-Marie Bissot, a French Canadian explorer and soldier, the city was settled by fur traders in 1732 and is Indiana‘s oldest city. Located in picturesque Knox County, Vincennes is a prime destination for history buffs and agriculture enthusiasts. In fact, agritourism accounts for a large portion of tourist visits to Vincennes. Attractions include local galleries, performance venues, nature parks, and notable historic sites in and around the city. Things To Do Near Me: Old Cathedral Library And Museum
The Old Cathedral Library is famous for being Indiana’s first library. The building houses more than 10,000 rare books and documents, including a Papal Bull authored by Pope John XXII in 1319. The oldest book in the collection is an illuminated manuscript volume from the Officium Sanctae Mariae.
In addition to written works, the library contains a host of artifacts. Prehistoric stonework, maps, and paintings from the 18th and 19th century, as well as the personal effects of President William Henry Harrison, President Abraham Lincoln, and Shawnee Chief Tecumseh are contained in the museum’s extensive collection.

My husband and I had the privilege of visiting Vincennes over a weekend, and we packed in a lot over the two days we were there.When it comes to museums, there are more in Vincennes than I had ever imagined! Things To Do In Vincennes Indiana: Vincennes State Historic Site
The Vincennes State Historic Site pays homage to Indiana’s early statehood. It is the area where Chief Tecumseh once lived, the home of America’s 9th president William Henry Harrison, and the spot where American troops prepared for the Battle of Tippecanoe.
Today, guests can stop by the visitor’s center at the Vincennes State Historic Site to learn about all the noteworthy events and people from Vincenne’s past. The site also includes the original territorial capitol, a replica of Indiana’s first college, the Elihu Stout print shop, and a historic home known as the Thompson birthplace. Admission to the site is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

When was the last time you were in the memorial at George Rogers Clark National Historical Park? The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm, except national holidays. Stroll the beautiful grounds that overlook the Wabash River and browse the displays in the visitors center. In an effort to keep visitors safe, tours of the memorial are limited to 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm.
If you just dont have the time to visit our museums, use our cell phone tour to Dial and Discover information on each attraction. This brief audio tour has 12 tour stops beginning with George Rogers Clark and ending with the Sieur de Vincennes statue. The tour is free except for plan usage. Pick up a visitors guide at the Visitors Bureau for a list of cell phone tour stops.
Cooler weather is a great time to get the family outdoors and learn more about our natural surroundings. The Second Sunday Nature Walk features a new theme every month, and as a participant you will discover amazing facts about nature! Walk are held at Ouabache Trails Park monthly.
Get up close and personal with jets and tanks at the Indiana Military Museum. This remarkable museum has one of the most comprehensive displays in the Midwest right here in Vincennes! The outside exhibits are free for public view and gates are open during the museums hours, 10am to 4pm daily.
Roger C Clark Memorial
This monument next to the Wabash is a fan favorite and has stood as the icon of Vincennes in recent years. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, located in Vincennes, Indiana on the banks of the Wabash River at what is believed to be the site of Fort Sackville, is a United States National Historical Park. A classical memorial here was authorized under President Calvin Coolidge and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936.In a celebrated campaign, Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark, older brother of William Clark, and his frontiersmen captured Fort Sackville and British Lt. Governor Henry Hamilton on February 25, 1779. The heroic march of Clarks men from Kaskaskia on the Mississippi River in mid-winter and the subsequent victory over the British remains one of the great feats of the American Revolution.
In 1966 Indiana transferred the site to the National Park Service. Adjacent to the memorial there is a visitor center where one can see interpretive programs and displays. The center is located on South 2nd Street in Vincennes.

The Old State Bank once served as the Vincennes Branch of the State Bank of Indiana. The building, which was constructed in 1838, models Greek Revival architecture with its massive columns and eye-catching facade.
The bank is located just minutes away from the scenic Wabash River and George Rogers Clark National Historic Park. Visitors can take a guided tour of the Old State Bank on Wednesday evenings from June through October. Tours for groups of 10 or more people are available by appointment only.

Established in 1732, Vincennes is the oldest town in Indiana, and has the distinction of being the capital of the Indiana Territory, from which William Henry Harrison, later the ninth president of the U.S., governed the territory. The influence of French traders is seen in architecture throughout the town. Today, Vincennes is home to attractions dedicated to the history and culture of not only Indiana, but also the United States.

Youll have three motives for dropping by this outlandish building on the western side of the Bois de Vincennes: To drink in the otherworldly architecture, to reflect at the Immigration Museum and to appreciate the marine life at the aquarium in the basement.
The palace is an art deco treasure, created for the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition, with all kinds of nods to the French territories at the time.
The fantastic relief behind the portico was shaped by Alfred Janniot and shows ships and exotic wildlife such as elephants and antelopes.
The Immigration Museum puts forward an even-handed study of immigration to France, while the huge cellars have tanks with 5,000 animals from 350 species.
