A Local Guide To Versailles Indiana

The county seat of Ripley County, the town of Versailles recently celebrated its bicentennial. This quiet Indiana town of roughly 2,000 residents was laid out in 1819 and is located near Versailles State Park. Tyson School itself was built in 1938 and features a historic art deco façade. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
History & Culture
The town of Versailles has one of the oldest post office in continuous operation in the state of Indiana. It has been in operations since 1823, just four years after the town itself was laid out. Tyson School is named after Walgreens founder James H. Tyson and the gymnasium was often the home court of Milan High School, who famously won the 1954 Indiana High School Basketball State Tournament and is the inspiration behind the movie Hoosiers.
Transportation
Versailles is located at the junction of U.S. Route 421 and U.S. Route 50 in southeastern Indiana. U.S. 50 allows easy access to Cincinnati to the east while U.S. 421 offers access to Indianapolis to the northwest.

History buffs won’t want to miss the Jeu du Paume, in which the National Assembly took the pivotal Tennis Court Oath that spurred the French Revolution. Just down the street from Notre-Dame de Versailles, the Musée Lambinet chronicles the story of the city with a collection of art, artifacts, and period décor gathered over the centuries.
