What Is There To Do In Vermont When You Dont Ski
If you are anything like me and want to enjoy a ski weekend but don’t really love the skiing part- I have got you covered. While I have tried many times to enjoy skiing, I find myself having more fun exploring the local area while my friends head to the slopes.
The great part about visiting a ski town is the unbeatable landscape and views. There are several great ski towns in Vermont that have plenty of other activities to offer. On this road trip, I visited 3 towns and drove through a few smaller towns that are worth mentioning.
Our trip consisted of visiting Woodstock, Stowe, and Burlington. If you are unfamiliar with the area, you may be wondering- how far is Burlington from Woodstock? The drive takes approximately an hour and a half to travel directly from Burlington to Woodstock. However, there are so many wonderful things to see and do along the way, it should take you longer.
We started our journey in Woodstock and traveled up to Hancock for the night. The following day we drove from Hancock to Stowe and then on to Burlington. While we completed this with one overnight- I would not recommend that for anyone visiting the area. My advice would be to stay in Stowe for an additional night to make the most of your weekend.

The Best Things To Do In Stowe In The Winter
Stowe Mountain Resort is one of Vermonts most iconic ski resorts, with 116 trails on the side of Vermonts highest peak. If youve come to Vermont to ski, then a trip to Stowe Mountain Resort is one of the best things to do in Vermont in winter.
The mountain receives more than 300 inches of snow annually, and the 40 miles of trails are spread out over 485 acres. The Cross-Country Center adds an additional 45 km of groomed Nordic trails and another 30 km of backcountry trails. Rentals are available for both downhill and XC skis.
While enjoying Stowe Mountain Resort, be sure to visit the outdoor ice skating rink at Spruce Peak Village. Its free to use and open to the public.

Home to the highest peak in Vermont, Mt Mansfield has a vertical drop of 2,360 feet and is most known for its adrenaline packed Front Four runs: Starr, Goat, National and Liftline.
Skiing at Stowe Mountain Resort was the main reason we visited Stowe in December and it was a blast. There are 116 trails, backcountry ski options and a cute après-ski village.

While Bondville fair isnt very big, what it lacks in size it makes up for in heart and affordability. This fair is the longest operating country fair in the United States. In 2018 it celebrated its 221st year! Every year I bring some preserves and vegetables Ive grown to the floral hall. In 2017 my pickles won best in preserves! With all the fair food you can eat, a tractor pull, and carnival rides its fun for the whole family. Most years Friday admission before 5pm is just $5 and includes carnival rides!

The largest corn maze in New England resides in Danville, Vermont. One of the best things to do in Vermont in the Fall, the Great Vermont Corn Maze covers 24 acres and can take 2+ hours to complete without the assistance of clues. Each year the maze has a new theme! In addition to the maze itself there is a kids area with barnyard golf, a play place, and friendly goats! Make sure you head there in the early Fall before they take the maze down to prep for the following year.

Everyone loves Teddy Bears! Come see how Vermonts favorite bears are made at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. Located south of Burlington in Shelburne, Vermont, this factory makes the most hand crafted teddy bears in the United States. About an hour is required for the tour and checking out the shop and grounds.
Vermont Historical Society Museum
Located in Montpelier, the capital of Vermont, this museum celebrates just about everything related to the Green Mountain State and its history.
There are exhibits about food, fashion, flora, fauna and more.
You can look at real military coats from the Revolutionary War you can marvel at stuffed taxidermy animals that originally lived near the Winooski River.
The museum also plays host to a number of special events, including low- and no-cost ones that are open to the public.
You dont have to have a big budget to enjoy them.

The Best Things To Do In The Northeast Kingdom In The Winter
Vermonts Northeast Kingdom is home to two premier ski resorts. If youre staying in St. J, the closes ski area is Burke Mountain, just 16 miles north. The nearby Kingdom Trails feature a beautiful network of trails for winter use, including 31 miles of fat biking singletrack, 7.3 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, and 38 miles of snowshoeing trails. You must purchase a day pass to use Kingdom Trails and dogs are not permitted.
If you dont have equipment of your own, or just dont want to bring it all the way to Vermont, you can rent Nordic skis, fat bikes, or snowshoes at the Village Sports Shop in Lyndonville.
Another great option for getting outside? Ice skating! St. Johnsbury Recreation Department operates two free outdoor skating rinks in the winter: one at the Four Seasons Park on Main Street and the other at the Buck Park on Portland Street. Heating huts and lights at each.
You cant visit the Northeast Kingdom without paying a visit to Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury. Set on top of a mountain with more than 150 acres to explore, Dog Mountain is a place for dogs and their owners to adventure together off-leash. The trails are great for snowshoeing in the winter but dont forget to stop into the dog chapel to pay tribute to all the pups you have loved and lost.
