Things To Do In Utah Near Las Vegas

Visit Capitol Reef National Park

FUN THINGS TO DO IN LAS VEGAS: UTAH EDITION

Capitol Reef National Park is a hidden treasure filled with colorful cliffs, canyons, domes and bridges. It is part of Utahs mighty five national park system however it differs in that it does not offer a park shuttle bus service. Also, due to its more remote location, this park is much less visited than Utahs other national parks.

Capitol Reef can be divided into two areas to explore The Fruita District and The Waterpocket Fold. The Fruita section of the park is the most accessible featuring a paved scenic drive and campgrounds. The Waterpocket Fold is a more remote section of the park which requires a sturdy vehicle.

If you only have half a day to devote to seeing this park, we recommend visiting the Fruita section where you can cover many of the highlights in less than a day.

St George Dinosaur Discovery Site

Lets go back to St. George to talk about what is perhaps the most interesting attraction besides the nature parks. The St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site is a small museum that exhibits some dinosaur tracks preserved in excellent condition. There is a price to pay for admission to the museum, but if you have children I advise you not to raise their expectations because they might be a bit disappointed by what is offered.

Go Boating On Lake Mead

Lake Mead is a huge water reservoir east of Las Vegas. Hoover Dam on the border between Arizona and Nevada was used to block the Colorado river in the 1930s leading to the creation of Lake Mead.

You can drive to the Hemenway Harbor near Boulder City, rent a boat and go on the lake for the day. Add water skis or knee boards and have fun! We did something similar on Lake Powell when visiting Page, AZ and it was a blast!

Sundance Mountain Resort Utah

National Parks Near Las Vegas

And the final stop on the drive from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City is Sundance Mountain Resort, located half an hour east of Thanksgiving Point. This beautiful resort is worth checking out, particularly if you are a fan of winter sports the skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding at Sundance are world-class and will make for a great stop for a day before heading into Salt Lake City.

However, if you visit in the summer, or simply arent a fan of winter sports, there is still so much else to do at Sundance. The area is surrounded by great hiking and biking trails and is also home to Utahs longest zipline. Stop #5 Zion National Park

For this grand Utah national parks road trip, Im definitely saving the best stop for last! As much as I hate to admit it, Zion National Park is completely worth the hype. Its no wonder that its the 4th most visited national park in America.

Highlights: We learned the hard way that the Zion Shuttle is the lifeline of this national park. We didnt book our shuttle tickets early enough and had to wait until the second day to get them. You cant get into the most scenic portion of Zion National Park without shuttle tickets. We selected the 7am option and avoided the crowds altogether. And even with an early morning wake up, it was completely worth it.

Learn from our mistake and book tickets for the shuttle in advance. All the information you need about the Zion Shuttle can be found here.

I cant wait to return to Zion National Park and spend more time exploring this glorious natural wonder. Theres no place in the world quite like it, thats for sure. Heads up: The Narrows and Angels Landing were closed during our visit all the more reason to return!

Best things to do in Zion National Park
  • Hike to Observation Point
  • Explore the Narrows
  • Hike Angels Landing Trail

Time Needed: 2 full days, ride the shuttle one day and hike around the other parts of the park during the second day. Zion National Park is incredible, soak it in and dont rush the experience. Youll be thinking of this place for years to come!
