Learn About Black History

While we certainly studied the civil rights movement in school, I didnt know anything about the Tulsa Race Riot until just a few years ago, even though it was one of the worst instances of racial violence in American history. To learn more about the black community that was thriving despite the segregation laws that treated a portion of Americans as second-class citizens, start by visiting John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park. Through a series of statues and signs, this quiet green space invites visitors of all backgrounds to learn about the sacrifices made by black Americans and Native Americans over the past 400 years.

Then head to the Greenwood Cultural Center to learn more about the area known as Black Wall Street. The exhibits highlight the communitys prosperity and educate visitors on the horrific events that unfolded at the end of May 1921, killing hundreds of residents and leaving homes and businesses in ruin.

Pro Tip: For a richer experience in the Greenwood District, book a guided tour with the John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation. And dont leave the Greenwood District without visiting Wanda Js for some of the best fried chicken and greens youll ever eat!

Journey To The Center Of The Universe

Source: flickr

The Tulsa Center of the Universe is best described as an acoustic anomaly. To the untrained eye it simply looks like a worn circle about eight feet in diameter but when you stand inside the circle and make a sound the noise is echoed back many times louder. The circle is made even more odd by the fact that people standing outside of the circle cannot hear the noise at all. Well, that is what the legend dictates but in reality, from outside the circle the noise is just distorted.

See The ‘sacred Rain Arrow’ At Gilcrease Museum

11. See the ‘Sacred Rain Arrow’ at Gilcrease Museum

It may be the most recognized work of art in Oklahoma: a kneeling figure holding a bow and aiming an arrow at the sky. Most know it as the image that has adorned Oklahoma license plates since 2008. Yet the familiarity of the image does not lessen the impact of seeing the original work of art in person. Sacred Rain Arrow by the late Allan Houser has stood before the front entrance of Gilcrease Museum since 1989.

Blend Two Worlds At Laroma

56. Blend two worlds at La Roma

This is the kind of family-run, neighborhood pizza joint that you can still find all over the northeastern United States, but rarely in these parts. Large pizza ranges from about $13 for just cheese to about $21 for a supreme. There is no thick crust at La Roma, but their thin version isn’t the cracker hard thin crust you would get at the big, national chains. It’s so good, diners are likely to see a steady stream of people picking up take-out pizza orders during the work week.
