Tony Packo’s Toledo Ohio
If you ask Hungarians what a Hungarian Hot Dog is, they will tell you that there is no such a thing. Packo, of Hungarian origin, invented it and went down in history for this tasty innovation. His hot dogs, homemade buns, and special sauce are so famous that even celebrities come to Packo’s just to try them. In keeping with tradition, they then leave a signed bun to be placed on the wall among other exciting souvenirs. Packo’s is a family business that had its modest beginnings in 1932. Today, it boasts five locations in Toledo.
The original Packo’s is a large, bustling family restaurant where servers glide about the room with full trays, people chat and laugh, and nobody feels embarrassed by the sauce stains on their faces. Imagination Station Toledo Ohio
The Imagination Station is a hands-on interactive science museum located on Discovery Way on the riverfront of the Maumee River. It is a non-profit organization formerly known as the Center of Science and Industry. Today, the museum boasts more than 300 interactive exhibits, and it has a goal of making engineering, math, science, and technology fun for the whole family.
Some of the exhibits like Eat It Up! teach about nutrition, while other exhibits like the Science Studio teach children about biology, chemistry, and physics. Toledo is known for is American fusion food. Many of its locally-owned restaurants have created comfortable American dishes that include flavorful and creative twists, giving diners a unique experience.

Aboard A Great Lakes Cargo Ship The Col James M Schoonmaker At The National Museum Of The Great Lakes
Toledo is located on the southwestern corner of Lake Erie, in the heart of the Great Lakes, making it a great place for the National Museum of the Great Lakes. The museum is modern and interactive it is full of exhibits telling the stories of people and industry on the lakes.
A visit to the museum begins with an immersive video introducing each of the lakes. There are several hands-on exhibits in the museum that kids enjoy. My son was especially interested by an exhibit where he piloted a submersible, video game style, through the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Younger children were playing with black foam blocks representing coal during our visit they loaded the blocks into cargo ships from rail cars and then used them to power a ships steam engine.
The real highlight of the National Museum of the Great Lakes is a self-guided tour of the Col. James M. Schoonmaker on the Maumee River. The Col. James M. Schoonmaker is a steam ship that operated on the Great Lakes for most of the 20th century, beginning in 1911.
Visitors to the museum can walk through the ships engine room and much of the beautifully-restored ships quarters. Kids can touch almost everything in the ship. My son had fun playing that he was the ships engineer down in the engine room. Later, while my son pretended to pilot the ship, I enjoyed the view of Toledo. The view of the city of Toledo from the top of the ship is one the best around.

Toledo has earned a reputation for being a family-friendly city. Some of the most popular places to take kids in Toledo include the Toledo Zoo and the Imagination Station. In addition, there are many parks and playgrounds located throughout the city where kids can play, burn some energy and use their imaginations, all while making some new friends along the way.

Maumee Bay Brewing Company
Established in 1995, the Maumee Bay Brewing Company was the original player in the craft beer scene in Toledo. While it may be nearly 30 years old, it still has a loyal following of patrons while still attracting newbies who are just discovering what craft beer is all about.
In addition to having a diverse tap list, this brewery also features a full dining menu.
Ride A Bike 20 Feet Above The Ground At Imagination Station
Toledos Imagination Station, located in the heart of the city, is a modern childrens science museum. Kids from tots to teens will find exhibits that interest them at this hands-on science museum. Visitors over 54 inches tall can ride a weighted bike across a tightrope in the atrium of the museum, wowing the crowd twenty feet below.
Another favorite exhibit for older kids is the BOYO where they can pretend that theyre a human yo-yo. As kids find a way to make the human yoyo work, they are learning about kinetic and potential energy.
I especially enjoyed the shows at the Extreme Science Theater. During the show, the science educator did a fantastic job of interweaving science concepts between big demonstrations. Of course, the flashy science demonstrations with liquid nitrogen and fire are sure to keep the kids attention.
Little ones are not left out. There are several spaces set aside for them including the Little KIDSPACE. Younger children are also sure to love the classic water table where they can play with water and sand witnessing erosion firsthand. The ball pit, an educational model for oil refinement, is also a hit with children of all ages.

Outdoor Attractions In Toledo For Kids
The largest of Toledos metro parks, Oak Openings is a nature preserve that is mostly an oak savanna ecosystem. It also contains sand dunes and some rare plants. In the winter, visitors can cross country ski, and theres a great playground for kids, plus plenty of places to explore.
Pinkies up, or sneakers on the ground? At Wildwood preserve, you can both visit a historic house and explore the great outdoors. The Georgian Colonial-style Manor House has free tours and monthly events, like a series of teas, while the park offers a series of trails, and is bisected by the Ottawa River. Youll often see nesting birds in the spring, and prairie grasses and wildflowers during the summer.
The Toledo Botanical Garden offers more than 50 acres of gardens and plant collections, with sculptures scattered throughout, while the Artisan Village showcases demos, open studios, and crafts and plants for sale. Lots of kids activities take place in the Garden, while the summer brings concerts. Community gardeners take note: you can get advice and suggestions about your own garden as well.
There are drive though fast-food places, and theres a drive-through safari. At the African Safari Wildlife Park, camels, giraffes, bison and more are waiting for you with open mouths . Libbey Glass has a 170+ year history in the city of Toledo. The company, and its founder, played a part in creating many of the city’s largest corporations as well as the Toledo Art Museum and Toledo Symphony. The company is still going strong today. Visit their 16,000-square foot warehouse outlet store in downtown Toledo for savings of up to 60 percent on glassware, glass giftware, art glass, and accessories. The outlet, at 205 S. Erie St., is open seven days a week.
Toledo’s Imagination Station is located on the waterfront in the heart of downtown. The museum features eight themed learning worlds, including “Sports,””Waterworks,””Kidspace,” and “Mind Zone.” Imagination Station is open every day except for Mondays and major holidays. Admission is $13 for adults and $12 for seniors and $11 for children 3-12.
A Toledo institution, this Hungarian restaurant located just across the Maumee River from downtown, is known for its spicy pickles and peppers and its Hungarian hotdogs, topped with chili. Tony Packo’s, opened in 1932, was brought to the country’s attention when “MASH”‘s Corporal Klinger, a Toledo native, mentioned it repeatedly on the TV series. It’s a unique and affordable place to eat after a day of sightseeing.
Zip Line Over Giraffes At The Toledo Zoo And Aquarium
In a state with eight high-quality, AZA-accredited zoos, it takes something special to really stand out. Not only does the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium have big animals like elephants and polar bears, they also have a giraffe feeding experience and an aerial adventure course complete with a zip line.
There are multiple options at the aerial adventure course for visitors over 70 lbs. Big kids can climb through obstacles on the Challenge Course over three stories above ground or take a controlled plunge from 80 feet above the ground.
All participants in the Expedition Africa Aerial Adventure Course cross the Sky Bridges and experience the zip line. The sky bridges pass over 30 feet above the cheetah enclosure, and the 763-foot zip line sends visitors flying high above giraffes and other African animals.
Theres no shortage of unique animals to visit at the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium. Visitors of all ages can see penguins up close in their large enclosure just outside the aquarium. The penguins wander so close that staff are on hand to make sure no one reaches out to pet these cute birds.
Another favorite for our family was to see the zoos two hippos walking through the water and playing. My son and I also had a memorable time feeding lettuce to the hungry giraffes at Tower Ridge right next to the zoos Arctic Encounter.
