Which Safari Activities Are You Interested In

With an entire array of wildlife biodiversities, Tanzania offers a series of varied safari activities.

Walking safaris this is among the best easy to personally experience Tanzanias bush, a walking safari enables you to feel this environment with each and every sense in you. although it may not offer the big wildlife experience of a vehicle safari, this is ceratinly a must try activity. Some nice parks include: Ruaha National Park, the huge Selous Game Reserve as well as Serengeti National Park.

Boating safaris for several reasons, most wildlife game species are less lively when approached by boat and, because of that this can be a really relaxing and a fascinating way to experience your safari. Good park include: Selous Game Reserve

Vehicle safaris by far the most used way of going for a Tanzania safari is in vehicles that I recommend that it is a closed sided 4WD vehicles or an open sided 4WD. These are a wonderful way of covering most of the ground and, since the animals are becoming more accustomed to seeing the vehicles, you will even get pretty close to them! Recommended parks: The northern parks and the southern parks

The 3 Best Parks And Reserves To Visit In Tanzania

Choose the Best Tanzania Safari Guide for Exceptional ...

All the parks and reserves in Tanzania have their own unique draw and offer something different and unique. However, a safari visitor to Tanzania should take in the following must-see parks on their safari trip:

Serengeti National Park

A popular honeymoon destination and documentary location in northern Tanzania, the Serengenti plains are home to the worlds largest movement of animals, often called the Great Migration.

Covering 5,700 sq. miles of savannah, the Serengeti is renowned for the incredible migration of over 2 million animals on a 300 mile loop following seasonal rains around the Serengeti and mara rivers by Masai Mara in Kenya.

A safari trip to the Serengeti is a must-do on a trip to Tanzania. The Seregneti is a World Heritage site and Biosphere Reserve, as well as the main tourist attraction in Tanzania

Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater in the Great Rift Valley in northern Tanzania is unique as it is the worlds largest intact volcanic caldera, a cauldron-like hollow formed in the volcano with a crater floor covering over 100 sq. miles and 0.4 miles deep.

This incredible crater, a UNESCO world heritage site in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is often referred to as Africas garden of Eden, due to the sheer volumes of animals and wildlife found there. The Olduvai Gorge, a famous paleoanthropological site, can also be found here.

Selous Game Reserve

Tarangire National Park: An Elephant Empire

Close to Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire is worth much more than the usual day visit. During the June to October dry season, animal especially elephant concentrations along the Tarangire River are among the highest in the country. The parks bird count of more than 500 species means that a visit here is one of the most rewarding Tanzania safaris for twitchers, while its full range of large predators complete the appeal. Tarangire is a beautifully diverse wilderness featuring riverine forest, huge swamps and open woodlands that include Africas iconic baobab trees.

Katavi National Park Relatively Untouched Wildlife Paradise

Wild and remote Katavi National Park is one of the countrys most unspoiled and untouched bush settings with amazing landscapes and rich wildlife. The 4,471km2/1,726mi2 park is difficult to access and so can be relatively costly to visit. As a result, few people make the effort to come here. While the popular Serengeti might see 125,000 visitors in a year, the remote Katavi sees no more than a few hundred brave adventurers by comparison. This is wild Africa at its very best and, provided you have the time and budget, its a park thats absolutely worth exploring. There are only a couple of small, rustic safari camps, so you often come across more prides of lion than tourists on a game drive in Tanzania’s third largest national park.

Stone Town Birthplace Of Freddie Mercury

Zanzibar is known for its beaches and turquoise water, but walking around Stone Town makes for an interesting day.

Freddie Mercury of Queen was born in Zanzibar and it was a highlight for us to see the door to his house and to visit Mercurys bar for a drink. Okay, so maybe I am too much of a Queen fan there are a lot of other things to do in this UNESCO World Heritage town.

It was once the king of the spice trade and sadly the slave trade. Walk through the narrow alleyways and marvel at the famous Zanzibar doors, smell the spices and visit the old fort and night markets.

Hot tip: Stone towns stone maze streets get very hot. Choose accommodation on the waterfront to keep cool.

Mafia Island A Beach Paradise With Superb Diving

Further south lies the idyllic island of Mafia. A touch more sophisticated and exclusive than Zanzibar, but without the Mnemba price tag, this is an exciting coconut-covered island to visit. The beaches are superb and its mangroves and marine park ensure that the marine life is bountiful and the underwater safari experience far superior to Zanzibar or Pemba. More out of the way and a little harder to reach, Mafia is the place for adventurous travelers and diving connoisseurs. The star underwater attraction is the docile and completely harmless whale sharks that frequent the island waters between October and March each year.

What Type Of Accommodation Can I Expect On A Safari

The safari industry in Tanzania is well established and there is a good variety of accommodation on offer. Going with an outfitter offering comfortable camping safaris is not only the most budget-friendly way to travel, but it also adds to the sense of adventure. If real camping isnt your thing, but you like the romance of tented accommodation, there are tented camps offering different levels of luxury. For those visitors that prefer to spend their evenings in less of a bush environment, there are hotels that provide a total disconnect from the countryside, which also means less chance of creepy-crawlies in your room. The current trend, however, is toward exclusive designer lodges blending into the environment and offering an unparalleled level of luxury and service. The sky is the limit!

There are three distinct safari circuits: the most popular northern safari circuit includes famous places like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater the lesser-known southern circuit centers on Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park and the off-the-beaten-track western circuit includes Katavi National Park and the chimpanzee reserves on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. Mahale: The Mountain Retreat

Greystoke Mahale

Another of Tanzania’s off-the-beaten-track destinations is Mahale Mountains National Park. It is accessible only by boat and protects the rainforest-covered mountains that tumble down to the echoing shores of Lake Tanganyika.

A cacophony of unfamiliar calls ring out from the forest when you stand at its edge, awestruck by the majesty of the setting. Home to a dozen primate species, Mahale’s signature activity is guided chimpanzee trekking, though with annual visitor numbers barely making it into three figures, you may simply want to revel in the tranquil solitude of this wild place. Relax on the lake’s footprint-free beaches, go fishing, watch birds and butterflies, or trek into the cathedral-like forest for a face-to-face encounter with wild chimpanzees, our closest living relatives.

When to Go

Mahale is best for chimp trekking from July to October.

Visiting The Zanzibar Archipelago

10 Tourist Attractions in Tanzania (with Map & Photos ...

An ancient crossroad of continents and trade routes, an Indian Ocean confluence of history, culture and waterborne activities, Zanzibar is a fascinating world unto itself.

A thousand years ago, Zanzibar was one of the worlds most important trading hubs, an entrepot for spices and silks and a meeting place for the traders of Africa, Arabia, Persia and India. In the 16th century, Portuguese explorers muscled their way in and brought European trading goods and military power into the mix.

A century later, with Portugals resources stretched across the globe, the Sultanate of Oman seized control of the archipelago and went on to stamp its influence upon Zanzibar until it became a British colony in 1890. Under both the Portuguese and the Omanis, Zanzibar was an important hub in the African slave trade. Zanzibar became independent in 1963, but joined a union with Tanganyika a year later.

What to do in Zanzibar

There are two main focal points for visitors to the Zanzibar Archipelago: the main island of Zanzibar and Pemba. Ferries connect Zanzibar and Pemba with Dar-es-Salaam on the mainland, and Zanzibar with Pemba. There are also flights from the mainland to both Zanzibar and Pemba.

The dhow is synonymous with Indian Ocean trade and a dhow excursion to Menai Bay, a gorgeous marine reserve, is another highlight, while Jozani Forest is an off-the-beaten-track natural wonder.

Hike Mt Ol Doinyo Lengai

This active volcano stands 2,878m tall and is known for its natrocarbonatite lava, which is significantly cooler than other types of lava.

When things are quiet, geologically speaking, at Mt Ol Doinyo Lengai, you can venture into the crater and view the huge expanses of molten lava.

Once every seven years or so, the volcano also has a more explosive eruption of ash and rock ejections. From the top its also possible to view the Lake Natron salt flats, home to large numbers of nesting flamingoes.

Hiking up Mt Ol doinyo Lengai is fairly strenuous and temperatures can be brutally hot. This is a good challenge if youre not ready to put away your hiking shoes after Kilimanjaro!
