Plan Your Next Weekend Trip In Sylva

Greening Up the Mountains is a large Earth Day festival spanning several blocks downtown every spring. The event features arts and craft vendors, food, and a 5K run. For 2021, the event will be held in August.

Every year, Sylvas Hook, Line, & Drinker Festival combines the towns love of fly fishing and craft beer. The festival features fly fishing guides and fishing industry vendors food trucks childrens activities live music clean water, outdoor activity, and wildlife advocates and WNC craft beer vendors. Usually held in May, the festival will be held in August this year.

The free Concerts on the Creek music series runs on Fridays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Head down to Bridge Park at dusk for live music in a family-friendly setting. Bring a chair or blanket, and enjoy.

Some of North Carolinas most beautiful scenes mountain peaks, waterfalls and trails are in Jackson County, where a great meal is never far away.

Making the decision to get away to the North Carolina mountains is easy. Deciding exactly where youll go may not be, with several attractive mountain towns dotting the landscape. Start your search with Jackson County and youll discover an outdoor enthusiasts paradise.

Plan a multiday trip to the neighboring towns of Cashiers, Sylva and Dillsboro, easily flowing from one destination to the next. Led by hiking trails through the mountains, youll experience unforgettable sights and breathtaking views. And along the way, youre always only a few steps from a remarkable meal.

One of the highest waterfalls in the Eastern U.S. 411-foot Whitewater Falls is near the state line just off Highway 281, south of Cashiers. Follow the quarter-mile paved trail from the parking lot to picnic spots and the upper overlook. If youre feeling adventurous, head to the smaller lower overlook, which is down 154 wooden steps.

Next up is Whiteside Mountain, with 740-foot vertical cliffs that are the tallest in the East. Its part of the panoramic view youll enjoy on the 2-mile loop trail that includes the 4,930-foot peak. Watch for peregrine falcons during the first half of the year. The cliffs are a nesting site for the raptors, which grab their prey from the sky.

Try Something Out Of The Ordinary Before You Go

One of our favorite things to do when we travel is check Roadside America or Atlas Obscura for hidden and out-of-the-way attractions. There are several unusual attractions in Sylva, NC.

Lovers of the WNC Movie Trail will enjoy seeing what remains of the iconic train crash from the movie The Fugitive.The American Museum of the House Cat features 5,000+ feline artifacts and curiosities, including a statue of the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet from 600 B.C. Sylvas Freedom Park behind the Historic Courthouse and Library features life-sized replicas of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. And the county is also home to the Smallest U.S. Post Office in the United States, located near Cashiers. While no longer in operation, it is still open every day for curious visitors.

Fishing And Boating Expeditions

If youre looking for a more relaxing activity, fishing is Sylva is second to none! Jackson County is designated as North Carolinas Trout Capital, and Sylva is a large part of the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail. Reel in trout on Scott Creek, which runs right through downtown Sylva!

In nearby Tuckasegee youll find Wolf Lake, which is popular with anglers and boaters.

Tuckasegee River is another popular spot for fishing, swimming, and tubing. Its mostly a lazy river, but does have some class II rapids, which are fairly easy to navigate even for the younger ones.

Built in 1914, the Jackson County Historic Courthouse, majestically located at the end of Main Street, provides fantastic views of the downtown area and the surrounding mountain backdrop. The historic courthouse currently houses the local library. Climb the 107 steps.

Around Christmas, the historic courthouse comes to life with lights and Christmas trees on the lawn.
