Free Things To Do In St Louis Missouri

Guest post byMelissa Jones

Ive always enjoyed traveling and have brought the love of traveling to my children as well! We live in the Midwest, about equal distance from St. Louis, Nashville, Louisville, and Indianapolis, so those are cities we have been lucky enough to visit on several occasions. However, as a parent, my favorite big city to visit is hands-down St. Louis, Missouri!

St. Louis is one of my favorite places to visit with my kids because there is such a variety of things to do there! We can hit museums, the zoo, the Arch, professional baseball games , and so much more.

However, part of the enjoyment of making a day trip or a weekend getaway trip to St. Louis is that there is so much available to see or do for free or very cheap!

Additionally, we typically pack our lunch and stay at a local hotel with free breakfast and free supper to lessen the expense of our trip even more!

There seem to be endless activities in St. Louis, but here are some of my favorite free and cheap things to do in St. Louis with my family!

St Louis A Bit Of History

St Louis has an interesting history, founded by the French as a fur trading fort, it is named for King Louis the IX and the XV. It was temporarily owned by the Spanish, and later purchased by the fledgling United States as a part of the Louisiana Purchase. The city became the base for westward expansion. For a period it was commonly referred to as Mound City, because of the density of Native American Earthworks in the surrounding areas. Soon after that, the location on the Mississippi River, enabled the city to develop into a large and prosperous port city. It was also a central crossing point for those moving west, which also brought increasing industry to the area.

At one time St. Louis was Americas fourth city, and the biggest to the west of the Mississippi, but throughout its history, it has been a city of biggests and firsts. It was the first US city to host an Olympics, and a World Fair. It can boast the first university and cathedral west of the Mississippi, the first arched steel truss bridge, the first steel dome capital, the worlds first skyscraper, the first interstate highway, and the US first kindergarten. It is the home of Budweiser Beer, Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, toasted ravioli, and it is the home that made ice cream cone, iced tea, 7Up, and Dr. Pepper popular.

Gateway To The West: St Louis Weekend Travel Guide

*This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase using any of these links.*

I collaborated with Expedia.com to share the perfect itinerary for a weekend in St. Louis. As always, all opinions are my own.

Oh, St. Louis the Gateway to the West! Why is it called the Gateway City exactly? Well, St. Louis played an integral role in the westward expansion of America. In the 19th century, Lewis and Clark, among many other adventurers, used St. Louis as a starting point for their journeys to the West. Hence, the iconic Gateway Arch was constructed to symbolize its significance. That, combined with dozens of other premier community attractions, makes St. Louis one of the richest cultural and historic cities in the country. And now that we live just an hour and a half away, its also quickly become our favorite weekend getaway spot.

Fortunately and unfortunately, theres no shortage of fun local activities. It can be tough trying to fit everything into one weekend. So, Ive created this handy St. Louis weekend travel guide to break down where to stay, what to eat, and, most importantly, all the most fun things to do in St. Louis.

St. Louis, Missouri is a wonderful destination for families, couples, and solo travelers looking for midwest road trip ideas. Youll love the history, diverse neighborhoods, great restaurants, and lots of free attractions that would cost you a fortune in most other cities. If youre taking a road trip to St. Louis or just looking for unique things to do in St. Louis this weekend, consider experiencing a handful of the more quirky experiences you can enjoy for a most memorable visit to the Gateway City.

1. Watch The Sun Rise Under The Gateway Arch

Okay so this requires you to get out of bed early even though youre probably on vacation or supposed to be enjoying an a relaxing getaway, but its totally worth it. If youre already staying downtown, take a walk over the Arch grounds about 20 minutes before sunrise. If youre driving down, consider doing this on a Sunday as you can park for free anywhere downtown and it will be less crowded. If youre looking at the Arch from dead center on the Missouri side, the sun will rise beyond the left leg. Youll have plenty of time to walk about the park and capture some great photos with hardly anyone there but a few joggers and other early risers.

2. Ride The Wheel On The City Museums Rooftop

3. Explore Forest Park in a Paddle Boat

4. Whisper To Someone At Union Station

5. Sample Thin Crust Pizza

6. Hear The Organ at the Fabulous Fox Theater

7. Meet A Clydesdale

8. Stand In A Long Line For Frozen Custard
