Youngs Jersey Dairy Yellow Springs

Located in one of my favorite places in Ohio is this local restaurant and family-owned farm and creamery. The restaurant I could take or leave, but the ice cream is sensational. It is produced and packaged completely on the premises and comes in dozens of flavors that change with the seasons. Usually I prefer froyo to ice cream, but I cant pass up Youngs Dairys chocolate peanut butter. Besides shoving amazing frozen dessert down your gullet, you can also pick up exceptional cheese, also made at the farm with milk from their Jersey Cows, visit those very same cows, feed the goats, pet the pigs, play putt-putt, try the batting cages, even navigate a corn maze in the fall. And while youre in town, make sure to meander through Yellow Springs, too. The quaint hippy town is brimming with local restaurants and coffee shops, interesting galleries and shops, and plenty of hiking.

This year the Warren County attraction has sunk $10 million into an expansion of the former Boomerang Bay water park. Doubling in size from 15 to 33 acres, it has been given a new name and will have plenty of additional interest with the closing of the neighboring Beach Waterpark.

The Soak City Waterpark, which will open on Saturday, will feature more than 50 water attractions, including Tidal Wave Bay, a massive 39,000-square-foot wave pool, a new action river, entrance and more places to lounge and relax.

If youve been to the park before, then its worth a trip back, because the impressive addition features animatronic figures in an interactive theater, a massive carousel, cars, toys and a train, to name just a few of the things vying for your attention. The 65-acre site had already been home to the largest carillon in Ohio, 25 historical buildings, the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, costumed interpreters and more. The navigation system incorporates 10 hand-operated locks which are recognized as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. If that sounds impressive, just think of The Hoover Dam, the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge. They also hold this distinction.

While the lock and dam system was a major waterway for transporting goods when it was constructed, it now serves mainly recreational boats. Stop at Lock #7 in McConnellsville and you can enjoy a picnic lunch while watching the boats pass through.
