Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort in West Virginia, USA

If you do then you should head to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park for a little fun and even get to take an unforgettable ride on a train. Located in the historic town of Cass, WV you will find a park that will take you back into history for the day. A time where all you had was a train to get from place to place and not a car. There is even a company store that is open from 8 am to 8 pm where you can eat at a restaurant, visit the museum or purchase something from the gift shop. Stop by the visitors center to learn more information about the park and keeping it authentic. View the tickets here to see which ride looks fun to you.

Easy Access From Major Cities

In addition to offering a variety of summer and winter activities from which to choose, Snowshoe is also a surprisingly-convenient location for many residents in the eastern part of the U.S. Theres no need to trek to New England or fly to Colorado to access all of these activities. By car, you can reach the village in less than five hours from the following cities:

  • Richmond, VA
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Greensboro, NC

However, you could also consider flying into Greenbrier Valley Regional Airport in Lewisburg, WV which is roughly 90 minutes from Snowshoe. Flights to the airport currently include daily service on United from both Washington-Dulles and Chicago-OHare , and prices are very reasonable.

For example, round-trip flights from Chicago to Lewisburg are pricing at ~$279 per person, while those from IAD are pricing around $183 for just about every date in the booking calendar.

Alternatively, this could be a terrific use of Aeroplan points. As long as you keep your total flight distance under 500 miles each way, you could book one-way award tickets for just 6,000 points.

This price is valid on both the two nonstop flights but also select connecting flights out of other gateways including Newark .

“THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! 5/5 — I highly recommend!!!The touchscreen on my phone was very messed up to the point my phone was not usable. I held off on getting my phone fixed for the longest time, thinking that it was an internal issue that would be extremely difficult to fix. In fact, Apple tried to charge me $600. I thought I would be better off getting a new phone at that point but did not have the money to do so.However, I messaged Staymobile and got a response literally right away. I explained my problem and they pretty much said it was an easy fix that would cost around $150. I immediately went and dropped my phone off and it was fixed in around 30 minutes. They were so professional, kind, and my phone is as good as new.I really appreciate a business that is honest and is not trying to swindle you. I would personally recommend this place to everyone and anyone. I could not have had a better experience and it truly made my day!”

Take Some Time To Look Around Elk River Snowboard And Ski

“Like its namesake, Elk River Touring Center, six miles away, this Elk River branch on the ground floor of the sumptuous Soaring Eagle Lodge, tends to the needs of the active life style, particularly in the snowboarding and skiing class. Although occupying a relatively small footprint at the base of the lodge, nevertheless the store has an impressive array of snowboards, skis, ski blades, clothing and accessories. It is one of the very few places in the area that offer ski blade rentals. On the accessories, it’s goggle and eyewear selection is truly outstanding. As usual with the Elk River brand at Snowshoe, it is staffed by courteous, knowledgeable and customer oriented employees. You won’t feel like you’re a grain of sand in the beach. The management and his employees provide personable treatment at very reasonable rates. Entering the store, the customer is amazed at the efficiency in space utilization. I’m addition to boarding and ski gear, the store also stocks, rents and sells snowshoes of various proficiency levels. An outstanding store with a superior track record of serving the Snowshoe community.”

Buy A Sandwich For Lunch At Old Spruce Cafe And Tavern

“We were looking for somewhere different to eat on vacation. This place is really small inside and it seemed like most people knew each other. They had a decent menu and a couple of specials. Most of our table decided to go with the jerk chicken tacos once the waiter told us that the chef was actually from Jamaica. They were really good, but not spicy enough for me, so the chef gave me some extra spicy sauce that was really great. Overall, good service, great chef, and a nice little place.”

I talked to a girl in the village near the shuttle pick up that was wearing a blue Snowshoe Guide vest. She told me to go up past The Sanctuary and there were trails all through the woods. If you go to top of the world parking lot and follow it to the far right you will see a sign for the Sanctuary there is a road that you can go up that will connect you to the trails. You could also probably go behind the 2 water storage towers and find the trails. We found some sections of snow that were almost knee deep. It reminded my daughter of the movie Narnia.

Cranberry Glades Visitors Center

Cranberry Glades Botanical Area is one of the most unique areas in West Virginia. Located high in the Appalachian Mountains, Cranberry Glades is the largest concentration of bogs in the state and is home to a large variety of unique and rare plant and animal species many of which are normally only found in northern tundra environments.

Visitors can easily experience Cranberry Glades by walking the half-mile Boardwalk, and by visiting the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center, which offers interpretative displays in addition to hosting various events, demonstrations, and guest speakers throughout the year.

Whether you are looking at an individual fuchsia-colored Wild Orchid or taking in the beauty of the bog plains, there is a special tranquility found only here.

The Glades fascinating sphagnum bogs are similar to that found in Muskegs of the Artic Tundra. When you first enter the area, you will notice Red Spruce, hemlock and Yellow Birch trees.

Along the left side of the Boardwalk, you may see a tree that has fallen over. The shallow roots so necessary for survival here do not adequately anchor trees against strong winds. Thus, the very adaptation which allows these trees to live here can also cause their death.

As you walk along the Boardwalk, you might see some of these plants: Bishops Cap, Jewelweed, False Hellebore, Indian Pipe, Turtlehead, Wild Raisin, Sundew, Grass Pink Orchid, and the Pitcher Plant.
