Opus 40 Hudson Valley

Opus 40 is a 6.5-acre sculpture park created by Harvey Fite in 1939. Built on the site of a bluestone quarry, the park features millions of pieces of bluestone, all of which have been laid by hand. Ramps and terraces rise out of the ground and surrounding pools, trees, fountains, and sculptures.

The natural landscape of the quarry has made for a unique stage, and you can head sixteen feet below to the epicenter of the main sculpture. Fite has expertly matched the natural landscape with man-made art. Opus 40 is open from Memorial Day through the end of October, and by appointment off season.

Experience Table To Farm Tours

“LOVED THIS EXPERIENCE! So very much worth it. Kevin and Lindsay picked us up in their shiny new van that could fit a family of rhinoceroses and from there we were off to the races for an evening of wine tastings and a homemade literal farm to table fried chicken dinner that was insanely delicious, overlooking the catskills. This is owned and operated by a farm-to-table-loving husband and wife team they are both extremely affable and deeply informative on the surrounding areas and history of the Catskills. Learned some incredible facts: ask about the ford dealership that struck a deal with Henry Ford himself! There is some time in the van between tastings, as expected, but the views are gorgeous and the company was great. They have multiple tour options so we’d definitely do this again when we visit. Thank you both!”

For 51 years, Johanna Hall has been living in Saugerties, a Hudson River town 100 miles north of New York City brushed with forests, dotted with hamlets and cradling a quaint village with shoulder-to-shoulder Victorians. She calls her home on four acres in West Saugerties the house that Janis built, because she and her then-partner, John Hall, bought it with money earned from writing a song for Janis Joplin . It was one of those watershed moments. Ms. Hall, now 75, went from being an urban rock critic for The Village Voice to gardening and co-writing hits like Dance With Me and Still the One, which Mr. Hall recorded with his band Orleans.

But why Saugerties?

To Catskill Animal Sanctuary

Woodstock was really very expensive, even in 1970, Ms. Hall said, referring to the Catskills music and art capital that is Saugertiess neighbor. It was like the East Village versus the West Village, she said: Saugerties had the same creative energy as Woodstock Bob Dylan and the Band recorded music nearby but it had cheaper housing and wasnt so self-consciously a bohemian brand.
