Driving Downtown – Saranac Lake, New York

There is always a new way to connect with nature in the Adirondacks, and this attraction is probably one you havent tried yet. The Adirondack Riverwalking & Forest Bath offers travel enthusiasts a way to connect deeper with nature by combing sensory immersion and relaxation in guided forest meditation sessions. Travelers can slow down the pace and recharge through forest bathing, a snowshoe walk rediscovering the magical wonder of winter. In the warmer months, you can wade through the rivers, listening to the intricate sounds of the wildlife on land and in the water. Participants can book online to plan their day for connecting to the wild.

Lake Clear Lodge Experiences

We are one of the last of the original Adirondack Great lodges open to the public. Great Camp experiences were to be more than renting a room or dining in a restaurant but an interconnected Adirondack immersion. Dinner at our Adirondack Alps Restaurant goes beyond the table to the meandering style of the Great Camp dining experience. You can enjoy the Fireside Speakeasy , History of Beer Workshops, traditional foods cooking demos, History of Adirondack Food tastings and a host of other fun, savory interactions await you.

Spring – Fall

Brewery: Raquette River Brewing Tupper Lake

Raquette River Brewing is the king of small batch specialty brews in the Adirondacks. Its large railroad-depot-ish space promotes lively and happy gatherings. Experts and casual beer drinkers alike praise RRBs experimental and innovative IPAs, porters, ales, and sours all tasty and unique.

At the moment, this craft brewery is famous for its best-selling Mango Wheat Ale and Maple Cream Porter. But sour lovers will be ecstatic with Fruit Salad Sour and Strawberry Banana Sour, and whatever others the brew makers come up with by the time you read this.

Although Raquatte River doesnt serve food theres bevy of food trucks outside, so you can spend the evening with decent vittles and a brewski to wash it all down.

Why You Should Go

One of the top things to do in the Adirondacks with kids is taking them to The Wild Center. Here, your little ones will get the chance to see the beauty of nature and its wildlife while having a great time doing various fun activities.

For a cheap price, you and your loved ones can create new memories together up in the trees or the picturesque forest of The Wild Center.

Drink In The View From The Top Of Whiteface Mountain

Family

Just 45 minutes away on the far side of beautiful Lake Placid is the towering peak of Whiteface Mountain. During the winter, Whiteface is one of the most popular ski destinations in the Adirondacks. If you are looking for some serious vertical, this is where you go. During the summer Whiteface Mountain makes for an amazing road trip as well. The drive up the winding switchbacks takes you up thousands of feet to the base of a castle! Yes, a castle!

From there a narrow, steep hike takes you to one of the most scenic places in the Adirondacks. We spent the better part of an afternoon lazing on the rocky peak and gazing down on Lake Placid from 4,449 ft above sea level.

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

If you only do one of the best things to do in Saranac Lake NY on this list, let the Winter Carnival be it.

Because this annual event is routinely held throughout the second week of February and is home to a whole host of events that visiting snow bunnies will love.

See, it was first started by the Pontiac Club in 1896 to break up the monotony of winter and to promote outdoor activity among patients convalescing in the area.

And since then, well, its become the longest-running festival of its kind on the east coast of the US. it also promotes a sense of community and now stretches out over the course of ten days, with a unique theme that varies from year to year .

Therefore, its truly a must-see extravaganza that even features a full-on hand-carved, ice palace in the center of town. No, really people, this is not a drill especially when you add in several races, obstacle courses, bake sales, arts and crafts sales, a chocolate festival, curling, frying pan tossing, special dinners, arctic golf, ski races, arctic bbqs, ice skating, scavenger hunts, parades, live performances, and fireworks displays that make this one of the true highlights of the winter season in the Adirondacks.

Address: Varies by the event.

Hours: This year the festival will be from February 4th through February 13th, with events scheduled throughout the day between 10:00 am 7:00 pm. But, check the festival website for this most up-to-date information.

Check Out The Breweries

  • Hex & Hop Brewery: Hex & Hop is one of the most popular breweries in the Adirondacks, with a tasting room and farm co-op right on Broadway. This brewery provides high-quality beers, meads, and ciders made with local ingredients in a cozy atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy their drinks with bar food in a pet-friendly environment. Sometimes they have fire pits and live music.
  • Ray Brook Brewhouse : Hands down one of the best breweries in Upstate New York. I loved almost every beer that I tried here. Get the flight of 6 beers for $12. They produce both traditional and adventurous brews. From a lager to a strawberry beer with probiotics! And the chicken wings were AMAZING! Order the buffalo sauce + garlic parm mixed flavors.
  • Blue Line Brewery: The Blue Line Brewery is interesting to see because it used to be a former car wash. They have been brewing beer for over 20 years. Locals love their pizzas.
  • Take A Spin On The Adirondack Carousel

NFCT Segment 02 – Long Lake to Saranac River in NY

The Adirondack Carousel is located at the corner of Bloomingdale Ave. and Depot St. in a storied area of Saranac Lake. It is located right next to the vintage Union Depot that up until recently, served the Adirondack Scenic Railroad.

Although the Adirondack Carousel is one of the newest Saranac Lake attractions, it has quickly caught on as one of the most popular among both locals and visitors alike. The Adirondack Carousel was opened in 2012, 13-years after it was first envisioned by local woodcarver Karen Loffler. This beautiful indoor carousel features animals native to the area such as beavers, geese, otters, bears, geese, and herons. They have been artfully carved and painted. Also, each one has a hidden ladybug. The boys loved going to each one to try and spot it. At the top of the Adirondack Carousel features stunning landscapes of many of the most beautiful areas near Saranac Lake.

The Adirondack Carousel is open year-round and is wheelchair accessible. During the summer, the doors and windows are opened wide to the surrounding park area. Each of the animal carvings has a name, artist, and description emblazoned on a plaque on their post. You can also visit each of the animals on their own page on the Adirondack Carousel website.

    Explore: The Wild Center

The 115-acre Wild Center in Tupper Lake NY is hardly obscure. Its been running full-page ads in glossy travel magazines and New York publications since its elevated Wild Walk, modeled on the High Line in Manhattan, was erected in 2015.

But due to its remote location, 30 miles from Lake Placid , the Wild Center isnt your average roadside attraction. In fact, there is nothing average about it. In the words of communications director, Nick Gunn, We try to put a unique spin on our local nature.

One of the most unique spins is the above-mentioned Wild Walk. Thirty feet off the ground, elevated boardwalks lead visitors inside a tree, out to a massive eagles nest, and onto a giant spider web: all while weaving around steel pilings designed to look like the tops of conifer trees.

A section of the property, called Forest Music, is also distinctive for its meandering trails and contemplative music piped through 24 speakers hidden in the trees.

The Wild Center property abuts the Raquette River. So, aside from naturalist led trail walks, visitors can sign up in the summer for guided canoe trips no matter what your level of paddle expertise and other programs.

We provide a range of full experiences for guests fun and educational at the same time, says Gunn. Theres a trout-filled pond, maple-sugaring in season, and a natural play area for kids.

Dont Pass Up A Delicious Breakfast At Boathouse Saranac Lake Pub

“I must say, Boathouse Saranac Lake Pub did not disappoint! We entered and were immediately greeted, shown to the bar, where we wished to imbibe a pre-dinner potable. Kathy ordered the strawberry Moscow Mule I, the unfiltered amber. Both arrived promptly and both were delicious. We were eventually seated outside with an incredible view of the lake. The sun was out, then it wasn’t, then it was, then it wasn’t, so our waitress took it upon herself to ask if we would like blankets with which to wrap ourselves . Restaurant-style vertical heaters were also lighted while we sat.I had a blueberry Mule while on the patio. This, too, was delicious, although I would recommend the strawberry over the blue. The salmon with farro was quite possibly one of the best salmon dishes I have ever had. More specifically, the salmon was accompanied to the ball by five escorts: Farro, Tomato, Olive, Feta, and Carrot Puree. The autumnal semi-sweetness of the puree complemented the salty olive and feta in a quite creative way, making this a playful but mysterious little dish. The quarter chicken, too, got very good reviews. Finally, the cheesecake was both cheesy and cakey .All-told, dinner was a little over $100.Don’t miss: the flavored Moscow Mules!Pro Tip: : don’t be afraid to ask for a blanket when the cool evening breeze comes in off of the water.”
