Watch Sunset Over The Blue Domes Of Santorini

Santorini, Greece Travel Vlog: NOVEMBER 2018

While crowds of people gather at the caldera to watch the sunset, we found our way to the Blue Domes for sunset. It is the most iconic place to photograph in Santorini, It had a bit of a crowd itself, but by the time blue hour hit, most people were gone and we had it to ourselves.

We recommend taking Santorini Photography Tour as there are so many places to photograph in Santorini. Believe me, we got lost a lot looking for our iconic photographs. You can customize your tour to choose the places you want to capture the best photographs of.

Start Your Morning With A Visit To Red Beach

If you didnt already visit Santorinis beautiful Red Beach as part of your boat tour , its the perfect place to start your third day on the island!

The beach is about a 7-15 minute walk from the parking lot, and requires a bit of a hike down a trail to get tobut it is gorgeous.

Even if you dont plan on swimming, the nearby views are worth a peek!

Things To Do In Krakow Old Town

If youre visiting Krakow for a weekend or just a couple of days then I highly recommend spending one day looking at all the things to do in Krakow Old Town. Theres more than enough to keep you busy for a whole day.

I recommend walking around the Old Town, but if youd prefer a whistle-stop tour you could hire an e-scooter!

Ive plotted these places into a Google Map so youll easily be able to walk from one to the next without getting lost!

Explore An Archaeological Excavation Site

This Akrotiri archaeological excavation site in Santorini features ruins from the city of Akrotiri, which was buried by a volcanic eruption in 1700 B.C., though the first habitation dates from the Late Neolithic times . You can explore the massive visitor-friendly site where walkways lead you around the entire perimeter. There are not many placards or informational pamphlets, so if you would like the complete history during your visit hire a tour guide.

The Archaeological Bus Tour To Akrotiri Excavations & Red Beach includes a guided tour of the site.

The surrounding village of Akrotiri is beautiful too.

Check The Ancient Acropolis Of Arkasa

Situated about 23 km from Pigadia, the Acropolis of Arkasa is another historical site you should not miss when visiting the island. This archaeological site is located right by the sea, offering inspiring views of the coast and the nearby Kassos Island.

Back in the fourteenth century BC, the island of Karpathos was occupied by the Mycenaeans, who built an imposing acropolis with unique walls on the headland. Also known as Paleokastro , the citadel had already been inhabited since prehistoric times, and according to different studies, it was probably occupied until the late Byzantine times .

Visit Iconic Blue Domed Churches

Its impossible to go to Santorini and not visit one of the beautiful churches that everyone has seen in photographs. However, youll find churches all over the island, not just in Oia and Fira! Karterados has a beautiful blue-domed church, as well as one in Perissa.

Remember to be respectful at all times when visiting these churches as they may be seen as tourist attractions in photographs, but theyre working places of worship for locals.

How To Travel To Karpathos By Plane

Believe it or not, theres a small national airport on the island . It receives daily flights from Athens during the peak of the season. Sometimes charter flights from central European countries also land on Karpathos in summer.

The small but modern Airport of Karpathos is located on the southern part of the island, about 14 kilometers from Pigadia, the islands capital. To reach the airport, travelers can drive their rental car and take a taxi or the local bus.

Some of the companies traveling to Karpathos Airport are Aegean and Olympic, but also Smartwings, Finnair, Neos Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Sky Express, and Eurowings.

Eat A Santorini Salad

No doubt while in Greece you will eat plenty of traditional Greek food including salads topped with large hunks of feta, but while in Santorini indulge in a delicious Santorini salad. This salad is a version of a Greek salad that uses the ingredients that Santorini is known for: capers, sun-dried tomatoes and cucumbers. You can find a delicious one at Salt & Pepper in Fira.

Try The Local Donkey Beer

4K Santorini | Perfect Honeymoon Destination in Greece | Amazing Place in the World to Visit

Donkey beer is the local lager that is produced by Santorini Brewing Company

Santorini has its own local brewery with its own beer brand called Donkey. You will find the Donkey beer in all restaurants and tavernas of the island and it comes in 3 different types: Yellow Donkey , Red Donkey and Crazy Donkey . Here are all the beers that the brewery is producing. You can also visit the brewery itself and even buy Donkey merchandise which is pretty cool, anyways. The brewery itself is not something super impressive but you can definitely stop by for a few minutes as you drive to Kamari beach and grab your beers.

  • How To Get To Santorini Donkey Brewery: the brewery is on the main road from Fira to Kamari and you will see it on your right hand as you go towards Kamari. There is a small parking lot outside of the brewery but there is also a local bus stop that stops in front of the brewery. This is the bus from Fira to Kamari.

The Benefits Of Santorini In Winter

Oia, Santorini, in winter

If you want to visit Santorini to swim and sunbathe at its beautiful beaches and enjoy the nightlife, then a winter visit isnt for you. The weather is not guaranteed to be warm in winter and the nightclubs are closed.

However, if you are not concerned about those things then Santorini in winter is perfect because:

  • The cost of accommodation is far less in the winter months
  • The hordes of tourists that fill the island to the brim in Summer are relatively few
  • Exploring and hiking the landscape of Santorini is much more comfortable with the cooler weather.
  • The weather is relatively warmer than most of Europe
  • You can photograph Santorinis sights without hundreds of tourists in your shot
  • Car rental in Santorini is cheaper in the off-peak season.

Sunset From The Fairy

Oia is the most northern tip of the island. This is the cliché, postcard village you probably have in mind.

It attracts visitors all year long. A charming village with little shops, cafes, hotels and spectacular views.

To be honest with you, prices here are steep but the views are spectacular and visit here is definitely one of the things that should be on your bucket list.

Due to its beauty, this is one of the unique things to do in Santorini.

My best recommendation: Take the Traditional Sightseeing Bus Tour.

This full day tour takes around 10 hours and covers everything you wish to experience in Santorini. It is hassle-free since you dont have to ride on your own along the hilly roads and dont need to care about parking and such.

This tour covers:

  • Red Beach: a volcanic beach, best known for the unique color of the sand and red lava cliffs
  • Traditional village: quaint village with hilltop windmills, fortified medieval castles and centuries-old churches
  • Perissa Beach: for lunch time this beach is the spot. How about a quick dip in the sea before the food arrives?
  • Santorini Winery: Visit a traditional winery and taste a few reds or whites of the wine selection
  • Profitis Ilias: islands highest peak with a wonderful views from the agricultural plains to the hilltop village of Oia
  • Oia sunset: The islands #1 sight in no rush!

The highlight for me is the sunset in Oia village!

Hike To The Top Of A Volcano

Nea Kameni is a volcanic island in that is part of the Santorini archipelago and hiking to the top of it is one of the best things to do in Santorini! It requires a boat ride from the mainland, which can easily be purchased at the old port in Fira. Or for more of a guarantee book in advance Hiking tours will bring you to the crater and here you can take a steep, rocky climb to the top passing incredible lava formations, smoking craters and fantastic views. Not something you get to see everyday!

Do A Greek Islands Cruise From Athens In November

I did a Greek Islands day tour from Athens and it was awesome . You can read more about the tour in this blog post, but we visited three islands and my favourite was Hydra. Although heading from Athens to Santorini is a popular route, unless you fly you cant really do a day trip to Santorini. I also think Athens in November is superb, but you will want to visit the Greek Islands in warmer weather.

Docked in pretty Hydra

Archeological Sites In Santorini

Santorini Island has two major archeological sites from different times in history. The first is the ancient and well-preserved city of Akrotiri. It is the most important site found on the island and in the entire Eastern Mediterranean. Akrotiri is protected by a modern roof, which provides shade for those visiting during the daytime.

Ancient Thera is the second archeological site of Santorini, located on the top of the Mesa Vouno Mountain. Here, you can find the remains of a church, temples, shrines, and a theater.

Both sites are perfect things to do in Santorini on a day trip with your rental car or ATV.

Santorini In November Are Ferries Running From Athens

Heeding to Greece November 5-10 ! Hoping to leave Athens the 5 to santorini and return to Athens evening of the 10th! Are ferries running during that time or are they sparce? Also best place to stay with private hot tub and caldera views that’s open that time! Any other information about activities still available during that time are welcomed thanks!

Use the filter system at www.booking.com to find accomodations that are within your budget.

Do they not show ferry schedules this far in advance ?

If you are not seeing the schedules for November it only means they have not decided on the timetables yet. By November the ferry system will be in “winter mode”, meaning fewer departures, and some routes will be discontinued until the 2018 tourist season begins in April/May.

You can use the calendar function on this website to backtrack to last November to see what was available then. But don’t assume it will be the same this coming November.

Edited: 4 years ago

Hello,

Im going there at the same date as you,

schedule of blue star ferries are now online but it seems there is no stops in santorini others days than Sunday … However, when you try to book a ticket, ther is departure Santorini to Piraeus on the 7th or 8th of november… so i guess one of those info is wrong… but wich one?

I don’t no what to do…, does any body know if Yes or No there is ferries to and from Santorini?

Thanks you in advance ..

Here is a map with the location:

Low Season In Santorini

So, that leaves the low season in Greece, aka winter. Now, I say winter, but its not exactly freezing cold and blowing a gale with a blizzard thrown in for good measure.

Yes, youll get some cold and rainy days, and its probably best to avoid Santorini in January if youre not a fan of coastal storms, but aside from that, winter is a great time to visit Santorini.

Youll get many warm, sunny days, and even the days when it does rain, its rarely a washout. So, generally speaking, the weather in Santorini in November, December, and February is still pretty decent.

Deciding on the best time to visit Santorini comes down to what you want and enjoy. If you love beach time and crave cocktails on a balmy summer night, you obviously need to save up and visit during the peak months.

However, if youre willing to be a little more flexible, you may find that winter in Santorini is an excellent time for you and a way to cut costs on this quite expensive location the rest of the time.
