Liberty Park is Salt Lake Citys prized urban oasis featuring over 80 acres of lush green space. The oldest park in Salt Lake, Liberty Park was purchased by the city from the estate of Bingham Young in 1881, and in 1980 made the list of the National Registry of Historic Places.
The park features a large pond containing two islands, numerous athletic courts and fields, 1.5 miles of walking trails, and several childrens play areas. Additionally, the Tracey Aviary, featuring 135 species of rare or endangered protected birds, resides within the park, along with the Isaac Chase Mill, the oldest commercial building in Utah. Salt Lake City has great public transportation . Inside of the city, you will find plenty of public buses and a light rail system . Both are operated by the UTA .

Transportation runs from around 5am until midnight on most days and expect a limited schedule on Sundays.
One thing to note is that if youre heading outside of the city, you will need to rent a car. A rental car will give you the freedom to take day trips and will grant you access to some of the gorgeous mountainous scenery that surrounds the capital city!

Slc 1 Day Suggested Itinerary
This itinerary can be a bit bespoke depending on where youre staying in the city and depending on your travel styles. Most attractions are in the vicinity of other attractions with the exception of Liberty Park and many of the eateries I recommend.
We definitely recommend spending part of your day in the Temple Square area and the other part of your day in the Foothills Cultural District .
However, if youre just on a quick stopover in SLC before hitting the road to some of Utahs national parks and other sights, you may not be as into visiting the Natural History Museum or a hiking trail.
Nevertheless, below are the sights we recommend visiting if you have only one day in Salt Lake City.

Living Room Lookout Trail
If youre wanting to get out of the city and enjoy a little of the Utah capital citys nature, head to the Living Room Lookout Trailhead located right beside the Natural History Museum of Utah near the University of Utah.
The 2.3-mile hike is a moderate level, out and back trail that is located close to Red Butte Gardens and is a great place to get your feet moving!
The trail is usually heavily trafficked and you can find parking nearby off of Huntsman Way. The trail is known for being narrow and there is little shade along the way! Prepare accordingly!
The view from the top shows a side of the Salt Lake Valley that gives you a new appreciation and perspective of the city it is definitely recommended!

See The Birds At Tracy Aviary
On the south side of Liberty Park is the Tracy Aviary, with a large variety of birds from North America and other parts of the world. One of the world’s oldest aviaries, it was established in 1938 by a local resident.
Perfect for families, the Tracy Aviary has 19 indoor and outdoor exhibits, spread across a wide area. Be sure to see Andy the Andean Condor, one of the aviary’s highlights. This huge bird has a wingspan of nearly 11 feet.
Every hour there is a “Nose to Beak” animal show led by naturalists, and these range from hawks soaring above your head to hand-feeding a pelican. There is a small fee to participate in these sessions. Longer and more intensive sessions are available for a higher fee.

Library Square And Washington Square
The Library Square and Washington Square area of Salt Lake City includes two of the city’s iconic buildings: the Salt Lake City Library and the Salt Lake City and County Building, and one of the city’s favorite museums: The Leonardo. The Washington Square/Library Square area is between 400 and 500 South, and between State Street and 200 East.
The Salt Lake City Public Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie, embodies the idea that a library is more than a repository of books and computers it reflects and engages the city’s imagination and aspirations. The curving building features ample daylight, spiral fireplaces, art displays, an auditorium, children’s play areas, and shops on the ground level.
The Salt Lake City and County Building was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, considered one of the greatest architects of his time. As one of the most representative examples of the Richardson Romanesque style, the Salt Lake City, and County Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Utah Heritage Foundation provides free tours of the City & County Building on Mondays at noon and 1 PM from June through August. For a modest charge, the organization will provide tours on days other than Monday.

Marvel At Salt Lake Temple
Salt Lake Temple is the flagship place of worship for Mormons around the world and is certainly one of the best places to visit in Utah!
The temple was opened in 1893 and is considered to be sacred. Therefore, only congregation members are allowed to enter the church. Visitors can still tour the gorgeous grounds and admire the impressive facade!
Look out for the All-Seeing Eye of God on the central tower, as well as the gilded Angel Statue!
