Important Tips For A Beach Day In The Hamptons
The beaches here are a bit complicated, regulations vary in different areas, some rules change on the weekend, etc. The below information will give you an idea of these regulations, but be sure to do additional research based on the exact beach you plan to visit.
There are private, residential, and public beaches around the Hamptons. Private beaches are obviously off limits. The residential beaches often have signs that say for residents only. While theres nobody enforcing this I would avoid these beaches unless you are renting a home in said area.
The public beaches are free and open to anyone however its very difficult to get parking passes. Passes are prioritized for residents and need to be purchased before the season begins. Some beaches have daily parking passes, such as Long Beach in Sag Harbor.
Dont fret! This doesnt mean you cant go to the beach. The public beaches are still free and accessible to anyone without a parking pass. However you will need to walk, bike, or be dropped off.
When To Visit The Beach
Most beaches are open year-round from sunrise to sunset.
The beaches are most crowded from July 1st Labor Day. If visiting on weekends during this stretch I recommend arriving by 10 am to snag a good spot.
Trust me its worth waking up early, the beaches here are incredible.

The Sag Harbor Oyster Club
The Sag Harbor Oyster Club was formalized into a 501-3c in 2020 with the mission of clean water advocacy up and down the East Coast. Fully-funded by Simon Harrison Real Estate from its inception, the effort follows on from the Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery, an “oyster garden” under the Sag Harbor village docks funded and maintained by real estate broker and clean water advocate, Simon Harrison. The oyster farming endeavor was intended to put the shellfish to work cleaning the harbor’s water.
In January 2016, after learning that oysters were being raised so close to the outlet pipe of the Sag Harbor sewage water treatment plant on the village waterfront, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation ordered the Sag Harbor Harbormaster to shutter the operation. New York State prohibits cultivation of shellfish in uncertified waters where harvesting of oysters for human consumption is banned. A further danger is oysters ingesting polluted water, as they too become tainted. Harrison stressed his oysters were not offered for human consumption.
