Safety Harbor Florida Today
The main drag in Safety Harbor is appropriately named Main Street. It runs east-west and ends at the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa located on Tampa Bay.
It is a pleasant street with dozens of neat shops,restaurants and art galleries. Art and artists are important elements of this little town.

This place is so incredibly colorful, creative, and imaginative, I just didnt know where to look first. And I could only look around the outside because SHAMc is closed for the month of August. It seems every inch of building is painted or covered in sculpture or mirror. Every inch of ground is also covered in sculptures. Most everything is whimsical or has an uplifting message. Its a delight for photographers, artists, and anyone seeking a unique visual experience. I cant wait for September to roll around so I can explore the grounds more fully and see all the hidden delights inside the buildings.

Slightly out of town from the main Safety Harbor area, but well worth the drive out, Horsepower for Kids is an excellent place for kids to enjoy some time getting up close and personal with horses.
As well as horse riding, there are other animals here, such as guinea pigs, foxes, wolves, a variety of reptiles, and birds. In fact, the petting zoo boasts over 200 different types of animals all of them have been rescued and given new homes, where they live in a safe environment and are loved by the staff and guests alike.

I’ve always thought of southern food as being comfort food. Southern Fresh confirms that I am thinking correctly.
This is a small restaurant with a plain inside dining room and a wonderful outside dining deck.
The prices are great and the ambiance is perfect for this kind of dining place. The menu is limited, but that’s okay too.
You will be in heaven if you like meatloaf, mash potatoes, green beans, fried chicken, roast pork, collard greens and various grilled vegetables.
The restaurant is in a converted bungalow and would be fun to visit even if you didn’t eat there. The service is prompt and friendly.
If you are of the sensitive skin type, the restaurant will even lend you some bug spray to use on their deck. I did not find it necessary in October, but some people might.
Sandwiches are great try the Boston Butt Pork Sandwich with a side of collard greens. Delicious and filling. If you don’t like chicken, try their redfish. It’s just as good as the chicken.
The fried chicken is not prepared in advance it is made to order while you wait. This takes a little longer that Kentucky Fried Chicken or Chik Fil A, but you will feel that the wait is worth it.
You can get chicken breast, legs, thighs or all of the above. Desserts are more comfort food try the strawberry shortcake or the banana pudding.
Southern Fresh has a small but nice selection of beer and wine.

Located on the central-west coast of Florida, Safety Harbor is a relatively new city in comparison to other places in the U.S. It was founded in 1917, though the land itself was settled long before Columbus as far back as the Stone Age, some 6,000 years ago. This is reflected in the relatively small population of 16,000.
Safety Harbor is near Tampa Bay. It is part of Pinellas County and has connections with Route 19 and Highway 590. It is just 19 miles from Tampa itself, 283 miles north-west of Miami, and 103 miles from Orlando.
Legend has it that it was named because the area around Florida was notoriously populated by pirates in the 18th century during the so-called golden age of privateers. Once the land was in sight, you were considered to be in a safe harbor.

History Of Safety Harbor Florida
This “spring of theHoly Spirit” was given its name in 1539 by the Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto. In the early1900s water from the spring was bottled and sold around the country.
The little town was incorporated in 1917 and the famous Safety Harbor Resort and Spa was opened in 1924.
The first section of the resort, where the current Four Springs ballroom is today, was the water dispensary.
People came from all over the world to “take the water”, the healing Espiritu Santo mineral spring water.
In 1926, the main part of the Safety Harbor Resort was opened, the sanitorium. The site was designated a Historical Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1964.
The resort is still a popular destination to this day.
The area was originally known as Worth’s Harbor and was first settled by a French nobleman namedCount Odette Phillippe.
He is known for introducing the first grapefruit to Florida in 1823.

We have been lucky to win a gift voucher at a quiz night a few months ago for a quad biking tour at Waitpinga Farm, about 15 minutes from Victor Harbor. We decided to turn this into a weekend, and revisit a town we hadnt been to in around 15 years. On previous trips we were here for an event, or with other people, so this time we tested out some of the biggest tourist attractions for the first time.

Waitpinga Farm Quad Bike Adventures

This is what we came for. We head out of Victor Harbor to Waitpinga Farm under more grey skies. We were doing the Adventure Tour, which lasts for 90 minutes, so we were just hoping there would be no rain until after that. On arrival we were kitted out in safety gear, and then were taken through how the quad bikes worked. To ensure we got the hang of the bikes and to assess our levels of competence, we had two or three laps around a small track before heading off around the farm. We then had about an hour of riding around enjoying the views. We had the chance to go quite fast on some sections, make our way through some sandy twists and turns, and negotiate mud and small creeks.

Overall this was a fantastic way to get out and see some of the area, and to learn a little along the way. Quad bikes are of course fun, so there was the simple thrill of riding too. Another nice spot in town to escape it all, Folly Farms Nature reserve has a host of amenities to keep your natural side occupied. There is a butterfly garden and a community orchard, as well as nature trail walks and sway bench swings.
A wealthy benefactor, George Weiss, donated the land to the town some years ago he still patrols it every day, asking that the local government keep it free from development. There is a touching monument in the form of a poem to Georges late wife, Lucille.
