Today, there are all kinds of ways to enjoy the river, but a particularly unique way is to kayak them. Which might sound odd, considering you can do that in a lot of cities, right? Well, Richmond is the only city in the United States with Class IV white water rapids running through downtown!

Rapids are categorized from Class I to VI, with VI being extremely dangerous and often uncharted. Class VI are turbulent and do present some risk, but are perfectly manageable with the right guide.

Virginia Capitol And Executive Mansion

Designed by Thomas Jefferson, the Capitol houses Americas oldest legislative assembly. The design is of a classical Roman temple. Daily one-hour guided tours showcase historical statuary and paintings, rare exhibit objects and restored legislative chambers. Self-guided tours are also available. The Virginia State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark. It is also nominated as a World Heritage site. Open 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Institute Of Contemporary Art At Virginia Commonwealth University

Youll find an edgier collection at the ICA Richmond, which opened in early 2018 to great acclaim. Rotating exhibitions occupy two floors and encourage contemplation and discussion. During our visit, a giant mural in the lobby displayed quotes collected from barbershops around the city. A powerful display by artist Paul Rucker, who was on-site discussing his work, explored the impact and ideology of the KKK. One of the three locations for the American Civil War Museum, Historic Tredegar is located near Brown’s Island and Belle Isle on downtown Richmond’s riverfront.
