Spot Wildlife At Walker Nature Center

7 Things You Need to Know About Living in Reston Virginia

Tucked in the woods along Glade Drive is the lovely Walker Nature Center. The center offers a nature-inspired library with a reading area for kids. Sit near the large windows to watch birds and other critters at several feeders. Outside there are trails through the woods and down the hill to Lake Audubon.

If you are up for a longer walk, combine a nature center visit with a hike through the Glade Stream Valley. Paved paths border the restored stream with bridges and benches along the way for wildlife watching. We’ve seen hawks, foxes, beavers, and many bird species in the stream valley.

Lake Thoreau Loop Trail Reston Virginia

When you fancy a little outdoor exercise the Lake Thoreau Loop Trail is a good option in Reston. The multi-use paved trail is a favorite with local dog walkers and is around 2 miles long. Offering pleasant views of one of the citys lakes, the trail meanders through a mix of residential pathways and there is a good mix of sunny and shaded areas. If you are planning to bring along the family you need to consider that some parts of the trail are fairly steep and would be cumbersome to navigate with a stroller or with very young children on foot.

Bike The Washington & Old Dominion Trail

Known as the skinniest park in Virginia, the Washington & Old Dominion Trail is a wonderful rails-to-trails conversion maintained by NOVA Parks. The paved bike trail stretches from the quaint town of Purcellville to Arlington, and about 5 miles traverse Reston.

The Reston stretch of the W& OD passes near several of the places on this list, so you could plan a bike-centric visit . The trail is also a fun place for cross-country skiing after a snowstorm.

The Reston segment of the W& OD includes a parallel bridle trail that is a nice option for hikers. The paved trail gets very busy on weekends when fast-moving bikes compete for space with families out for a stroll. If you’re on foot and you don’t mind hills and an uneven dirt surface, stick to the bridle trail. It’s also generally shadier in summer.

We rounded up 10 favorite Reston restaurants including a local nano-brewery, and a coffee shop and wine bar. Our favorites cover a range of cuisines including Japanese, Mediterranean, American, Vietnamese, and Thai. Enjoy The Holiday Tree Lighting And Sing

After a short break from picture-taking on November 29, 2019, Mr. and Mrs. Claus return to the Town Center at 6 p.m. to take a horse-drawn carriage ride down Market Street to Fountain Square, where the Reston Christmas tree will light up the area all season long. When the Clauses arrive, the tree will magically light up, immediately followed by a half-hour choral sing-along of traditional holiday music led by Reston Chorale and Brass Quintet.

For more cultural entertainment at the Fountain Square that night, you can also arrive early for a 5 p.m. performance of selections from “The Nutcracker” by the acclaimed Conservatory Ballet. After the music stops, you can stick around to enjoy shops that will be open late or take a horse-drawn carriage ride yourself until 10 p.m.
