Things To Do In Prescott With Kids

The Palace Restaurant And Saloon

THIS MUST BE FAKE! Arizona Day Trip with Kids! Things to Do in Prescott, Arizona | Wild Tales of…

Step back in time with a meal at the Palace Restaurant and Saloon. The Palace first opened in 1877. It burned down in the big fire of 1900 along with the rest of Whiskey Row. Legend has it the townspeople grabbed their drinks and the ornately carved Brunswick Bar so they could continue drinking across the street as they watched the flames consume the buildings.

Expect delicious and hearty cowboy fare here like steaks, ribs and burgers. Theres a childrens menu for little buckeroos, too. Kids will especially like walking through the old fashioned swinging saloon doors at the entrance.

Sunday Prescott Trip Day 3

Todays itinerary included The Heritage Zoo and Granite Dells for more hiking.

We found a special deal using a Groupon for The Heritage Zoo which made it very affordable. The Heritage Zoo is more like a zoological sanctuary than an actual zoo since they dont breed animals, and the vast majority of the animals were rescued from the wild or people who tried to have them as pets.

We saw all sorts of animals including an albino rattlesnake, a brown bear, a llama, a fox, alligators and an emu. A few highlights of our day included:

  • Watching the tiger feeding time and learning how they hide her food so she can hunt
  • Howling at the coyotes and getting them to howl back LIKE CRAZY
  • Petting and brushing goats in the petting zoo
  • Petting a skink

The Heritage Zoo had a good selection of animals but was still on the small side. In about three hours we were able to see everything once and a few animals twice. For our little group, this worked out perfectly as a morning trip before lunch.

After a quick lunch at the Antelope Hills Golf Course, we headed back out for our final excursion of the weekend. The Granite Dells are these AWESOME rock formations that you can hike through along a pretty little stream. Since we had a decent amount of rain, it made for a good amount of flowing water and a perfect place to dip little feet.

After spending so many weeks in the Phoenix heat, it was such a nice weekend to be spend time outside picnicking, hiking, and seeing some animals.

Prescott AZ | What to DO?? | American Travel Family

We spent considerable time in the historic downtown district. It reminded us of what it must have been like in an old west town.

Downtown is a great place to find a distinctive hotel and restaurants that serve hearty and delicious meals. However, I love it most because of its courthouse, museums and theaters.

Lynx Lake Recreation Area

We decided to focus on the Lynx Lake Recreation Area. Its a very popular spot within the national forest, and has many fun things to do.

Several trails are in this part of the park, so we did some exploring on foot. We saw just a few mountain bikers on the trails.

While driving through, we happened upon a gold panning site. We had fun looking in the water but didnt have gold panning supplies. We will next time, for sure!

The highlight for us at Lynx Lake was seeing this guy walking down the street.

My husband nearly swerved off the road, it seemed that big! We were excited to get out and see him up close.

Dubbed as Everybodys Hometown, Prescott is a well-loved city by locals and visitors for its charming atmosphere and nostalgic vibe that is reminiscent of their childhood.

Prescott serves as Yavapai Countys county seat and previously served as the Arizona Territorys capital from 1877 to 1889.

The city receives thousands of tourists yearly, and a significant number of them later become official residents, evidently showing how truly remarkable Prescott is.

The places to see and things to do are limitless in this city and for this reason, you have to take your family and see it for yourselves.

Are you still dubious on whether you should pencil in this city as the destination for your next family vacation?

Saturday Prescott Trip Day 2

Things To Do and Explore While Visiting Prescott, Arizona

Well, this day did NOT go as planned. On our list we had swimming, the Spot Childrens Museum, and the downtown summer craft fair. We nailed one of three! Yikes!

Swimming was literally a requirement because, if our hotel has a pool, swimming is MANDATORY on every vacation we take. Even if it is FREEZING outside, we must swim if the water is habitable. In this case, the weather was warm and the pool was both indoors and heated. Double win.

Can you believe this photo was at 7am!?? I honestly laugh to myself just thinking about it!

After swimming was complete and we were dressed and ready to go, we found out two very sad things: 1) the craft fair we loved to attend each year had occurred the weekend prior due to a conflict in scheduling and 2) the Spot Childrens Museum had just closed its doors. Our plans for the day were definitely changed, but we were not defeated!

Back-up Plan #1: Shop at Target, Buy Snacks

We love Target. Our kids love Target. Target has toys and snacks. Target is always a win-win.

Back-up Plan #2: Buy Food, Make Picnic

After our shopping was complete, we thought it would still be fun to head downtown, even though the craft fair was not in progress. The huge downtown courthouse and surrounding stores make for a lovely place to eat a picnic, play with your dog, throw a football, and play & run around. We wanted to be downtown even if our initial plans had changed because it is just a place to take in the feel of the city.

Back-up Plan #3: Find Ice Cream

More Kids In The Woods

Children’s Conservation Corps and Junior Forest Ranger Program

At the end of the two camps, all of the kids and their families were invited to a Celebration Day that started off with a community service project at Granite Creek. About half of the 107 children participated in trail work, removing old fencing and planting trees followed by lunch and the awards. Each child was given a t-shirt, certificate, Junior Forest Ranger badges and a 1-year free day-use parking pass for the Prescott National Forest. Regional Forester Corbin Newman had the opportunity to attend the celebration on August 1. He met with the partners, children and their families in celebration of “More Kids in the Woods”.

As we look forward to getting more kids in the woods next year, we would like to thank all of the volunteers, partners, camp staff, the Mingus Springs Camp and Outdoor Learning Center, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Prescott College, National Wild Turkey Federation, Southwest Forestry Inc., Prescott Creeks Preservation Assoc., Prescott Greenways Trail Land Liaison, Arizona State Forestry Division, Mountain West Landscape Resources, The City of Prescott, and schools that made CCC so successful.
