Heart Mountain Interpretive Center
Overall Ratings
5.0 based on 275 reviews
The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center is located at the site of a former World War II Japanese American Relocation Camp. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese Americans on the West Coast were rounded up and confined in 10 camps around the country. One of these was located at Heart Mountain, and approximately 14,000 Japanese Americans were wrongly incarcerated here. The camp today features a museum, gallery, walking tour, original Relocation Camp structures and a World War II Memorial. The museum features interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages showing how Japanese Americans coped with unjust confinement and how the story of Japanese American imprisonment affects our lives today. A 14-minute introductory film plays several times each hour.

This is an excellent interpretive center and grounds. Everything is set up great, with a nice flow through the inside exhibition and a very well done interpretive trail a short drive from the center. Make sure to visit all the out buildings as well, as they are all a part of the history. The barracks building was closed when we visited – covid-19 related, I assume. A big thrill for us was meeting a gentleman who was also visiting who was the son of a couple who had been interned there.
Wake The Sleeping Giant

Every winter here in Cody Yellowstone, the sleeping giant awakens! Were talking about the Sleeping Giant Ski Area, of course. The 2020-2021 season is sure to be an exciting one, as a private investor has purchased the beloved resort from the Yellowstone Recreations Foundation. And they have big plans for the future!
Operating since the 1937-1937 season, the Sleeping Giant Ski Area is one of the oldest alpine ski areas in the country. Its situated in the stunning Absaroka Mountain Range, just outside of Yellowstone National Park, and offers over 180 acres of skier and rider-accessible terrain across 49 runs. From green circles to black diamonds, youll find runs for all ages and experience levels. Theres even a popular terrain park that is constructed almost entirely of materials found on the hill. There are quarter pipes, rails, kickers, boxes, and jumps everything an aerial specialist could dream of!
One of our absolute favorite features of Sleeping Giant is how much space there is. It never feels too crowded. Youll find it easy to maintain safe physical distance from other skiers and boarders, allowing you to focus on whats important carving it up on your way down the hill!
You can find out more about Sleeping Giant, including information on ticket prices, lessons, and more, by checking out their website.
