Things To Do In Portsmouth This Weekend

Take Advantage Of The Great Portsmouth Nh Shopping

Lots to do on Seacoast over holiday weekend

One of my favorite things to do in Portsmouth, NH is to explore the lively downtown area which is packed with wonderful and unique small businesses. Shopping here is also tax-free as New Hampshire doesnt have a sales tax!

There are far too many great shops to list them all here so Ill just highlight some of my favorites.

Inside Out

The only way I can describe Inside Out is that it feels like New Hampshire. The interior is all cozy brick and rustic wood with worn leather seating and their merchandise consists of comfortable yet fashionable womens and mens clothing as well as gifts, craft cocktail tools and accessories, homeware, and kids toys and books.

In particular, if youre visiting and want to pick up a unique souvenir, they have a wonderful selection of Portsmouth-themed merchandise like jewelry and bottle openers with Portsmouths coordinates or map on them.

LIT Boutique

Every time I walk into LIT, I want everything. This super trendy boutique has three locations: 2 in Boston and 1 in Portsmouth. The Portsmouth location is very fun to explore as they always have a great selection.

The jewelry, in particular, is always really beautiful and unique while being affordably priced. I never walk out without buying something! If you dont live nearby but want to check them out, they also have a great online store.

Sault

It isnt very big but their carefully curated selection is always fun to check out.

Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve is a 142-acre oasis at the mouth of the James River and connecting to the Chesapeake Bay through Hampton Roads. The preserve is bordered by Hoffler Creek, named after Revolutionary War militia Captain William Hoffler, and the entire area is steeped in rich history. Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve functions to conserve the last parcel of wilderness in the Hoffler Creek Watershed consistent with good stewardship for environmental education, research, and recreation. Paddling through the wetlands and watershed is probably the best way to experience this beautiful haven in the middle of urban Hampton Roads. Guided and self-guided kayaking outings are offered at Hoffler Creek. Guests may rent kayaks or bring their own. Space is limited so be sure to register early for any planned kayaking events. The Portsmouth Art and Cultural Center will host two re-enactment events this spring. The first event, A Post Such As Portsmouth, takes place March 28 and 29. Guests step back in time to see what life was like on the streets of Portsmouth when General Benedict Arnold and his soldiers occupied Portsmouth in 1781. Characters include members of the Royal Navy and other military, as well as civilians, some loyal to the Crown and others who support the Patriots in the quest for freedom. Emotions are high and duplicity reigns. See the action unfold in vignettes staged throughout the day, performed by about a hundred re-enactors from far and wide. For more background and a schedule of vignettes, refer to the article A Post Such As Portsmouth 1781.

On June 20, there is another opportunity to engage the British at a re-enactment called A Laudable Zeal: The Battle of Craney Island. Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones lived in Portsmouth twice, the first time in 1777 while his warship The Ranger was being built. It is believed that he lived in a rented room here during that stay, when the 1758 sea captain’s home was a boarding house.

The house is furnished with the Portsmouth Historical Society’s collections of furniture made by the prominent seacoast craftsmen and with locally made decorative arts. Along with these important examples, the house displays the society’s extensive collection of portraits, glass, and ceramics that include China trade pieces and a textile collection. Along with outstanding examples of needlework, this includes examples of dress in Portsmouth from the 18th through the early-20th century.
