Green Animals Topiary Gardens
4.5 based on 171 reviews
Green Animals is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. This small country estate in Portsmouth was purchased in 1872 by Thomas E. Brayton, Treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in Fall River, Massachusetts. It consisted of seven acres of land, a white clapboard summer residence, farm outbuildings, a pasture and a vegetable garden. Gardener Joseph Carreiro, superintendent of the property from 1905 to 1945, and his son-in-law, George Mendonca, superintendent until 1985, were responsible for creating the topiaries. There are more than 80 pieces of topiary throughout the gardens, including animals and birds, geometric figures and ornamental designs, sculpted from California privet, yew, and English boxwood. Today, Green Animals remains as a rare example of a self-sufficient estate combining formal topiaries, vegetable and herb gardens, orchards and a Victorian house overlooking Narragansett Bay.

This was my second visit. Garden lovers can find many beautiful flowers, plants, and interesting vegetables in addition to the “Green Animal.” If you are from local, I strongly recommend a membership. With it you can visit this garden as well as many famous mansions such as the Breaker and the Marble House. The current price for a couple’s membership is $80 for a year.
St Mary’s Episcopal Church Portsmouth Rhode Island
St. Marys Episcopal Church was built on 88 acres of land in Portsmouth known as the potter Farm, donated to the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island by Miss Sarah Gibb of Portsmouth, through a deed of trust. Designed by a famous English architect Richard Upjohn, the church was completed and consecrated in 1852. The Rectory, designed in Rhode Island colonial style, was added in 1936, and in 1970 the Gibbs House was built in honor of Sarah Gibbs to serve as an administrative center. Beautiful, light New Parish House was completed in 2012 to house common meeting areas, classrooms, workshops, kitchen and administrative offices. The beautiful, multi-windowed Chapel looks out on the St. Mary’s campus and is surrounded by the stained glass windows from the original St. George’s Church.

Fezziwigs Food & Fountain
Fezziwigs Food & Fountain, which is owned by the same people as Pickwicks Mercantile, shares that nostalgia for a bygone Dickensian era. It has a slightly brighter interior than Pickwicks, with a brick wall with booth seating on one side and the other featuring white painted shelves displaying fanciful tea sets as well as teas, candies, and other goodies that are available for purchase.
The costumed employees and ivy wrapped chandeliers make you feel like youve stepped right into the pages of Alice in Wonderland.
This quaint little soda fountain and cafe is well known for their spectacular sundaes and milkshakes and is a wonderful place to stop in for a treat, a coffee/tea, or a sandwich.
Ceos Gelato Bistro
Another favorite of mine is Ceos Gelato Bistro. It has a clean, modern interior and they serve all the classic flavors like vanilla and chocolate alongside more unusual ones like peanut butter curry or lavender blueberry that rotate daily for those more adventurous souls.
My favorite thing to get is an affogato sundae, which is vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso poured over it. So good!
The Fantastic Umbrella Factory
The Fantastic Umbrella Factory
Founded in 1968 on the site of an old Rhode Island farm property, The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is now a small complex of shops.
Shops include a small gift shop, a cafe, a general store, a graphics shop, a henna studio, and a native trading post.
In addition to the quaint shops, The Fantastic Umbrella Factory often hosts craftsmen and other vendors to sell their wares on the property.
Beyond all of the bazaar-like shopping, you can visit and feed the farm animals and stroll the lush and beautiful gardens.
Theres no doubt that The Fantastic Umbrella Factory, a quirky, bazaar-like shopping complex, will deliver an afternoons worth of retail therapy.

Eat Some Truly Sensational Pizza
After visiting Strawbery Banke, you can make your way back into town and back up Congress Street to Flatbread Company, one of my all-time favorite pizza places. They are part of another small franchise with 16 locations, mostly in the New England area.
The Portsmouth one is located in a cool industrial space with a tin ceiling and exposed ductwork with rustic wood tables and booths. They specialize in wood-fired, clay oven pizza using locally sourced, natural ingredients.
My favorite is the Portsmouth Community Flatbread, which is a red sauce pizza topped with organic caramelized onions, organic mushrooms, whole milk mozzarella, parmesan cheese and their special herb blend.
They also make a carne and a veggie special that changes daily, both of which are always very creative and extremely delicious! They had a veggie special once which was made with a sweet potato puree, goat cheese, and a honey drizzle that I still dream about sometimes.
