In some ways it’s selfish of me to not tell all my opinions of this preserve, because I like my solitude complete and my natural beauty unspoiled. But, all in all, this is my go to place in south Florida. Try the naturalist-guided kayak tours to get a taste of the unique environment of the preserve.

Hiking At Local Preserves And Parks
We love hiking, and as midwesterners hiking in Florida it is indeed a whole new experience for us. Things that strike me every time I am here are the sandy trails, sounds of nature I cant distinguish, and the warmth of the sun. Having said that, before heading out on any hike, make sure you have the things you need, plenty of water, bug spray, sunblock, snacks, and a camera.
Donald B. Moore Heritage Preserve:
Matt and I hiked the trails here within the preserve, and from the road, you would not know all the unique things within these short interpretive trails. We enjoyed the orange trail with its markers teaching us about flora and fauna of the area. I had no idea what most of the plant life was, and I appreciated the new knowledge. The boardwalks and trails are well marked and easy to navigate.
If you finish the orange trail and want a little more hiking, enjoy the green path. This trail offers a history of the area and plenty more lush views. If youre going to wander a bit further, you can take the blue trail out to the Indian River and check out the kayak stopover and the lagoon kiosk.
This preserve offers plenty of recreational opportunities, which include volleyball, horseshoes, and disc golf. You can have a picnic in one of the various picnic areas that include tables and charcoal grills.
Old Fort Park:
Our family loves history, and we stopped at Old Fort Park for a moment to read a bit about the park and the surrounding area.

Enjoy The View At Spruce Bluff Preserve
Step back in time at the Spruce Bluff Preserve. Home to over 97 acres of historic landscape, this picturesque spot can be reached by car, foot, bike, or canoe . This preserve was once the site of a tiny pioneer village settled in the late 1800s.
The preserve’s two main trails wind through the tropical forest, providing visitors with a welcome breath of fresh air and an intimate look at the area’s bird and plant life, including various flatwoods, scrub, and freshwater marsh.
The South AIS Indian Mount Trail covers about one mile of ground and winds visitors around the baygall, mesic flatwoods, and marsh areas to an AIS Indian Mound. This route can get a bit slippery when wet, and it’s uneven, so be cautious.
The North Pioneer Interpretive Trail also passes through lush flora, such as scrub and scrubby flatwoods. It takes visitors to the remains of a pioneer settlement including homes, a school, post office, cemetery, and sawmill. Walkers can venture even farther to St. Lucie River North Fork if they choose to stay on the extension. Stop along the boardwalk to see what creatures you can spot in the river below.

Take A Moment To Reflect At Veteran’s Memorial Park
At 2.5 acres, Veteran’s Memorial Park isn’t large. What it lacks in size, however, the park makes up for in both beauty and heart. Multiple memorials lie in this perfectly manicured park, set serenely against towering trees.
Wandering along the park’s paved pathways is a tranquil experience that forces visitors to enjoy a peaceful moment of reflection. Many branches of the military are represented here, as are fallen heroes from WWII, the Vietnam War, and Korean War. There’s also a memorial to those who’ve won the Purple Heart.
The park is also host to a lovely boardwalk and fishing pier, which is often spotted with anglers hoping to reel in a good catch. The on-site boat launch is another draw, as are the picnic areas, benches, and restrooms.
