Top Pick: 30 Years Later, We Still Want to Hear the People Sing.
What makes Les Miserables so enduring so absolutely eternal that it can be marketed as the worlds most popular musical without anyone batting an eye?
The West End production is ongoing as in, the original West End production. The one that opened in 1985. The Broadway production ran from 1987 to 2003, then was brought back in 2006 and again in 2014. Touring productions have been ongoing since the late 80s, including one run that began in 1988 and closed in 2006 a single tour lasting more than 17 years. These statistics, of course, focus on the U.S. and U.K. there are another 51 countries that have seen Les Miserables, aided by translations in 22 languages.
So why does this musical a somber, serious glimpse of an otherwise forgotten moment in French history endure?
Because its really, really good.
The songs, by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, are soaring, memorable compositions that will linger in your mind without the often-cloying qualities of more bubblegum Broadway compositions. The story weaves familiar, easy narratives the prisoner on the run, the star-crossed lovers, the young revolutionaries marching off to battle into an ensemble piece that seems to have a new plot development in every scene. And eventually, they build a giant barricade for one of the most dramatic action sequences in theatrical history.

When Could I See Debt Relief
It’s unclear because that depends on the timing of the Biden administration’s appeals, Pierce noted.
Advocacy groups for student debt relief on Tuesday applauded the White House’s decision to extend the repayment pause until June 2023, which will give eligible borrowers financial breathing room over the next few months as the legal challenges move forward.
“This extension means that struggling borrowers will be able to keep food on their tables during the holiday season and the coming months as the Administration does everything it can to beat back the baseless and backward attacks on working families with student debt,” Pierce said in a Tuesday statement.
