Areas & Neighborhoods In Omaha

Old Market

A historic piece of Omaha’s Downtown that still has its covered sidewalks and brick-paved roads from the horse-and-carriage days, the Old Market still feels like a frontier town in the middle of the city. Now frequented by artists and street performers, the neighborhood is home to lofts built in converted warehouses, along with restaurants and retailers in storefronts that date back to the 1870s.

Midtown

Public parks, research centers, century-old buildings, and modern developments make Midtown one of the city’s most dynamic districts. Fueled by its proximity to I-480 and some of Omaha’s biggest employers, the area has collected its share of trendy outlets on tree-lined streets, which sit alongside grand churches and stately manors that hearken back to the olden days.

Elmwood Park

Walking and bicycle trails, a swimming pool, and an 18-hole golf course make Elmwood Park a prime outdoor destination. Framed by the University of Nebraska Omaha, the College of St. Mary, and one of the city’s newest developments in Aksarben Village, the area has a modern college-town feel of pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods alongside the open fields and tree-lined streams.

See The Ships At Freedom Park Navy Museum

3 things to do: Omaha Community Playhouse, Midtown Crossing, Durham Museum

This large grassy area on the banks of the Missouri River is a great spot to stretch your legs and catch up on some military history.

You can walk right up to, and in some cases, inside, your choice of a mine sweeper, the USS Hazard, a small submarine, the USS Marlin, and a Douglas A-4D Skyhawk fighter jet. The massive anchor and propeller garden also makes for great photo opportunities.

The park is free and open daylight hours. Tours are available on Saturdays.

Get Close To History At The Durham Museum

My kids still refer to the Durham as The Train Museum. Its way more than trains, but definitely, they are a highlight there as you can walk through old train cars and watch a humungous model train roam. The museum showcases Omaha history in exhibits as well as traveling special exhibits. In the past, theyve have exhibits ranging from Muppets to dinosaurs to guitars.

Dont miss visiting the old-fashioned soda fountain. If you dont like root beer floats, treat yourself to a sundae.

The Durham Museum houses the citys largest indoor live Christmas tree each year, and has a full season worth of holiday activities during Christmas at Union Station.
