Evergreen Valley Lavender Farm

The Evergreen Valley Lavender Farm in Olympia is a serene, beautiful four-acre farm in the scenic Evergreen Valley. This small boutique facility specializes in lavender and its products: fresh and dried flowers, essential oils, hydrosols, bath products, and various lavender-inspired arts and crafts.

The farm is also a popular venue for local meetings and classes, and an inviting place to read a book, as there are many benches and seating areas found around the lavender fields. The farm grows and sells eleven varieties of lavenders, and visitors are invited to see the on-site distillation of oil.

Tour The State Capitol Grounds And Legislature Building

Admire the historic Legislative building, one of the largest masonry domes in the world. Reaching 287 feet, the dome is iconic to the Olympia skyline.

Living in Portland, weve definitely spent a lot of time in the Pacific Northwest. And while weve driven through Olympia a ton, either on the way to Seattle, or to visit one of my best friends, we havent spent a ton of time IN Olympia. Hard to believe because Olympia is the capital of Washington, and reminds us A LOT of Portland. Olympia is only an hour from Seattle and a quick day trip from Portland. We recently took a weekend road trip in the new Toyota CHR, to truly explore Olympia. While we wish we had more time to explore, heres our guide on all the awesome things to do in Olympia, Washington.

Olympia, like most other places in the Pacific Northwest, has incredible scenery with a great mix of lush forests, beautiful water, and city life. Its incredibly close to the popular Seattle, the beautiful mountains, or the beaches. If you want to explore some of the beautiful Northwest, put Olympia on your list!     10 Best Things to Do in Olympia, Washington

    Completed in 1928 at a cost of more than seven million dollars, Washington’s Legislative Building rises 287 feet above the Capitol Campus. The impressive white dome is visible from across the city, and ranks as the tallest masonry dome in North America.

    The historic campus surrounding the capitol building is also fun to explore, including a wide selection of memorials, fountains, and gardens. Make a point to visit the Tivoli Fountain, especially if you’re carrying a camera. For a good look at history, the Governor’s Mansion on the capitol Campus is the oldest building around and has been hosting governors and their families for over a century.

    Visitors can stroll the grounds, but a tour is worthwhile to see the lavish interior, which includes a five-ton Tiffany chandelier. Free guided tours run daily. Tours are also available for the botanic gardens and Governors Mansion.

    Washington Attractions: Bigelow House Museum

    The Bigelow House Museum is the oldest private residence in Olympia, Washington and is among the earliest buildings in the Pacific Northwest that are still standing. Built in 1850 for lawyer and legislator Daniel R. Bigelow and his wife, the house is a great example of the Carpenter Gothic style, which was popular in rural America in the mid-1800s.

    The house is surrounded by over an acre of the original familys land. Daniel Bigelow and his wife Ann Elizabeth, who was a schoolteacher, were important public figures in Washington, especially in the fight for womens rights and education. The home is today a museum of early Olympia and Washington Territory history and contains displays of original furnishings, documents, and artifacts.

    Visit Evergreen Valley Lavender Farm

    A serene and beautiful place to visit during your stay in Olympia is the Evergreen Valley Lavender Farm.     Established in 1976 to protect Mima mound landforms and Puget prairie grasslands, The Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve invites visitors to explore the 637 acres of grassland covered Mima mounds and forest land. As just one of 17 National Natural Landmarks in Washington, the Mima Mounds is a unique place to learn about geology, Mima mound hypotheses, prairie ecology, fire, and Native American historical usage of the mounds.

    A ½ mile paved loop and two gravel paths are perfect for guests wishing to see and learn more about this beautiful and rare ecological system. Striking vistas of Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens are sometimes visible from this location.

    Stroll The Boardwalk At Percival Landing

    Percival Landing is a 3.4-acre public waterfront park on the Budd Inlet, on the far southern end of Puget Sound. A wooden boardwalk lines this picturesque public space and makes a great connecting route between the Historic District and the Olympia Farmers Market. And on its own, Percival Landing offers a scenic spot to take in the waters that help define the city.

    If you love the outdoors, then you should check out some of Olympia’s parks! Priest Point Park is very close to downtown, and so is Tumwater Falls Park .

    At the WET Science Center , you can learn all about water and wastewater. It’s close to the boardwalk and the Farmer’s Market, which is open Thurs-Sun 10am-3pm until November. The Market has locally grown food for cheap, as well as woodworking and art from local artists.

    If you’re a coffee drinker, check out Olympia Coffee Roasting Company. They’re consistently recognized as one of the best small-scale roasters in the country and pour a mean cup of coffee. Last Word Books & Press, the local anarchist bookshop, is next door to the downtown Oly Coffee and has a classic Olympia vibe.

    Visit The Bigelow House Museum

    If you are interested in historical attractions, then one of the top places to visit in Olympia is the Bigelow House Museum. It was built in the late 1850s for the Bigelow family, and it is the oldest house in Olympia. It is now a house museum that contains a large furniture collection from the 1800s. There is a 45-minute guided tour of the property, and visitors can learn about both the history of the city and the legacy of the Bigelow family.

    About 15 minutes outside of Olympia is the Billy Frank Wildlife Refuge. Its a protected estuary that houses a ton of different wildlife. Thats because it sits at the Nisqually River Delta where fresh water from the river combines with the salt water of the Puget Sound.

    Its open daily and costs $3 per adult to get in. Once there, you can walk the 5-miles of trails that take you through the reserve, where you can spot different bird species, deer, beavers, amphibians, and more.

    Dining in the historic district covers every meal of the day. More than a few coffee shops offer early morning aromas, and places like 5th on 4th Sandwiches have long menus for lunch.     Keep your eyes peeled for the many murals adorning the downtown historic district. The city has over 50 registered murals, emblazoned on building sides and tucked away in alleys.     In the early days, the town of Tenino was renowned for its sandstone. Indeed, Tenino sandstone was used on numerous buildings, mainly in the Pacific Northwest.
