Walk Along The High Line
The High Line was originally an old railroad line that was eventually transformed into a walking path and an elevated park. The High Line begins at Hudson Yards and goes all the way to Chelsea Market.
Your walk is lined with beautiful little murals and gardens. Although as stated before NYC is very safe, we recommend you schedule this before dark. Besides, the footpath offers fantastic views of the streets of New York that are best enjoyed in the day.
If you bring your camera, you can take some good pictures of the city. You can avoid the crowds by walking early in the morning. If you begin at Hudson Yards, you can enjoy a nice breakfast or a cup of hot tea at a nice cafe prior to reaching Chelsea. Walking the High Line is a classic solo New York City adventure. Absolute do not miss!

Trust me when you live in New York, you quickly learn all the free things to do in NYC. We joke that just leaving your apartment costs $20! It may be in jest, but its a little too close to the truth.
One of the secrets of surviving in New York is learning how to have fun on as little money as possible, because this city tends to be even more expensive than you imagine. And youll learn that on your trip to New York! Whether you love dining out, seeing Broadway shows, or dancing till dawn, I guarantee youll end up spending more than expected.
Luckily, there are tons of amazing free activities in NYC to enjoy. Amazing parks and museums. Historic sites. Cool neighborhoods where just walking around is an adventure. All you need is a Metrocard to enjoy your visit!
That said things change over the years, and New York in 2022 is not New York in 2012. On one hand, attractions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art are no longer offering pay-what-you-wish admission to all its now only for locals. On the other hand, fun free Instagram-friendly attractions like Little Island have popped up, becoming new classics.

Bronx Museum Of The Arts
Submitted by Gerry Isabelle from Dominican Abroad
The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a cultural gem for the South Bronx community, and well worth visiting for visitors from anywhere in New York City. This museum recognizes the contributions of the Bronx, including important movements such as hip hop, graffiti art, and Caribbean jazz. Today, the museum owns over 2,000 works of contemporary art by American and local Bronx artists.
In addition to that, they host various special exhibitions. Currently, there are two you can visit. The first is Gerardo Dexter Ciprians Medicina de Amor, which uses mixed mediums, oral histories, and folklore to highlight the Dominican diasporas stories, resilience, and beauty. The second is Jamel Shabazzs Eyes on the Street, which features local New Yorkers street culture and traditions through photography.
The Bronx Museum of Art also offers guided tours, poetry slams, family days, and other events listed on their museum calendar. Best of all, this is one of many free museums in NYC an amazing way to keep the arts and culture accessible to the local community.

Further afield, Spa Castle, located in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, has giant warm outdoor pools where you can luxuriate for a whole day if you like.
New York City’s beaches and beachside amusement parks aren’t open year-round, of course, but if you’re visiting during the summer months, you’ll find them to be bustling gathering places for families, groups of friends, and singles alike. Visit The Tomb Of President Ulysses S Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was a decorated General and the 18th President of the United States. Grants wish was to be buried next to his wife when he passed. The request seems simple enough, but it wasnt. His options for a final resting place were limited because women were not allowed to be buried in notable military cemeteries at the time.
When Grant died from throat cancer in 1885, the mayor of New York offered to have him buried in NYC. His wife, Julia Grant, supported the offer and a large fundraising initiative took place to build what would become the largest tomb in North America.
Today, visitors can pay their respects to President Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Grant by visiting his tomb in the Upper West Side. Its one of the most unique free things to do in NYC.
Grants Tomb is undoubtedly one of the most famous buildings in New York City due to its significance, especially with history buffs. You can get free tours of the mausoleum through the National Park Service.

Read Under The Stars In Albertine
Youre probably wondering what Albertine is. right?
Is it some ritualistic, tourist sacrifice that is held for all those who solo travel NYC? Thankfully no . Its actually a French American bookstore on 5th Avenue . Super exciting right?
Okay, you might be thinking, Lame, I dont even speak French! What the hell?
Well, believe it or not, youre not actually here for the books, even though they have a great selection \ to choose from. Nope, youre here because this store is unlike any other bookstore you have ever seen.
I mean, you have to pass through a metal detector just to get into the store, which has an impressive, white marble atrium with gorgeous statues and exquisite column work that all welcome you into this historic space.
It honestly feels more like a royal residence than a bookstore. And once inside, walk upstairs and lookup. Because on the ceiling of the second floor, youll find a stunning kaleidoscope of stars and constellations that are set against a vibrant blue ceiling a scene that is beautifully reminiscent of Van Goghs Starry Night.
Plus its free so you have literally nothing to lose, except maybe the calorie you burned walking upstairs
