Things To Do In North Conway Nh This Weekend

Take A Ride Along The Conway Scenic Railroad

Why Shopping in North Conway, NH is so Great

One of the seasonal things to do in North Conway NH is taking a ride on a old fashioned train along the historic Conway Scenic Railroad. It was built in 1872 and was once part of the Boston and Maine Railroad. After being abandoned for a while, it reopened in 1974 as a tourist attraction, offering vintage and scenic train excursions.

The trains leave from the beautiful Victorian style Station, located right in the North Conway Village. The yellow building dates back to 1874 and is now in the National Register of Historic Places. I highly recommend arriving a bit earlier, so you have some extra time to explore it.

Conway Scenic Railroad has three different train rides to choose from. The two shorter ones travel to Conway and Bartlett and are a fun experience of riding on an old fashioned train. They are not too long, so they are perfect if you are traveling with young kids. However, if you want the best combination of riding along the historic railroad and amazing scenery to go along with it, I recommend the Mountaineer Train Excursion.

  • Conway Valley Train this is the shortest of the three rides, which is a 11 miles round trip and lasts 55 minutes. If you are traveling with young kids, this is a fun experience without being too long.
  • Bartlett-Sawyer Excursion Train this 21 miles round trip, which takes about 2 hours, takes you through Saco River Valley to Bartlett and back.

Book your Conway Scenic Railroad train ride here.

New England Ski Museum

Skiing played an essential role in shaping this region of New Hampshire, and much of that history is colorfully told at this museum, which is a satellite location of the original New England Ski Museum in Franconia. A small museum shouldnt be this good: Walking through it, you follow skiings wild evolution via a trove of early videos, posters, ski equipment, and clothing but it also delves into the personal stories of the men and women who built Americas early skiing industry, including the so-called father of modern skiing, Austrian native Hannes Schneider, who landed in New Hampshire after imprisonment by the Nazis and who oversaw the development of Cranmore.

Diana’s Baths North Conway New Hampshire

Located in the heart of the White Mountains, in the small town of Bartlett near the village of North Conway, Dianas Bath is a chain of small and pretty waterfalls. In the 1800s they were the location of a sawmill owned by the Lucy family. They abandoned it in the 1940s, and since then it has become a historic site protected by the Forest Service. The waterfalls accumulated drop is 75 feet. There is a 0.6-mile trail that leads to the base of the waterfall. The stream flow is naturally most powerful in the spring, when the snowmelt brings a torrent of water, creating quite a spectacle. This lovely spot is a popular family destination, but bug spray is a must.

Browse In The League Of Nh Craftsmen Gallery

South of the Main St. shops, the Leagueof NH Craftsmen Gallery isn’t just another craft co-op shop. Browsing among its juried works seems more like visiting a museum, with heirloom quality pieces in all mediums.

Brilliant colors and forms of blown glassware catch the eye first, then the luscious flowing colors of shibori-dyed silk scarves. Some artists use motifs drawn from the surrounding landscape: coffee mugs shaped like sections of birch tree, a honey pot with an acorn lid, bright cardinals and goldfinches made of blown glass, silver earrings in the shape of butterfly wings, copper enameled bowls with fern designs, a winter landscape in stained glass.

Others work in natural materials, turning a wooden salad bowl from a maple burl or creating a necklace of caged river stones. The entire collection is a feast for the eyes.

Hike To Diana’s Baths

From West Side Road, an easy three-quarter-mile trail leads through the woods to Diana’s Baths, a series of cascades and pools across descending ledges. As the water flowed and swirled since the glaciers covered these hills, it has carved and smoothed the granite, scouring out potholes, basins, and chutes.

As you climb higher, the ledges become flatter, and the scoops and swirls in the store become even larger and more dramatic. The falls were once used to power a small grist mill, whose foundations and water chute you can still see.

Take In The Views From Cathedral Ledge

North Conway, New Hampshire! Our Big Family Trip! A must See Day!

From Echo Lake you are not far from Cathedral Ledge, which among other things is a popular viewpoint with amazing views of Mt Washington Valley and North Conway Village. Bryce Path trail is about 1.5 miles long and will take you right to the top. The trail is open year round, so you can hike up even in the snow, but fall is definitely the best time to go. If you can time it around the peak foliage, you are guaranteed some spectacular views.

If you dont want to break a sweat, you can also just drive up to the top via the very convenient auto road . This is open in season only and closes to cars in the winter, but stays open to pedestrian traffic year round. Some people actually use the auto road to descend, as its way less steep than the trail.

Cathedral Legde is also a popular rock climbing destination.

Cool Off At Dianas Baths

Technically located in Bartlett, Dianas Baths is one of the top things to do near North Conway. The first time I ever visited the region, my friend took me to Dianas Baths and it is a stunning spot.

Dianas Baths are a series of cascading waterfalls found at the end of a short trail. At the baths themselves, on a summer day, youll find dozens of people swimming, relaxing, and playing. The site is quite popular. You can dip into the refreshing water or hike to the top of the falls further. There are nice photo ops everywhere.

It is $5 to park and leashed dogs are allowed on the trail .
