Charles Ray: Figure Ground
Through June 5, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan 212-535-7710, metmuseum.org.
This daringly streamlined exhibition surveys the five-decade career of the remarkable American sculptor in a mere 19 artworks, three of them photographic pieces. They occupy a spacious gallery of 9,600 square feet divided by a single wall, which signals that space itself is a major consideration for this artist. But Ray had a busier agenda, one that, expanding over the years, has come to include American history, literature and pop culture as well as the history of sculpture itself. It is to the credit of the shows organizers, Kelly Baum and Brinda Kumar, that this carefully selected show effectively outlines the growth of Rays sensibility, its steady opening out since the late 1980s its shift of focus from personal to civic space and its achievement of a kind of perfection or specificity that conveys the concentration and arduous methods by which these works come into existence. Are There Free Family Activities In New York City
Despite being chock full of tourist attractions that you have to pay for, there are plenty of things that you can do for free in New York City. You can explore the city with your family all without having to pay a dime!
One of the best free adventures to take in New York City is the Staten Island Ferry. It runs every half an hour on the weekends and provides you with a breathtaking view of New York Harbor and Lady Liberty herself. The ferry travels between Staten Island and Manhattan and you can even bring your bikes aboard to increase your adventure.
You dont have to spend money to window shop and New York City has some of the coolest flagship stores to wander through. Take the kids to Rockefeller Center where you can peruse the American Girl store and see the plethora of historical dolls. Cruise through the Lego Store and gape at the awesome constructions and more Legos than youve ever seen in your life.
If its Christmas time, behold one of the largest Christmas trees set up right in the middle of Rockefeller Center with a skating pond just beneath where ice skaters spin and twirl in the chilly winter air.
