Things To Do In New Orleans When Raining

Visit The Aquarium Or The Insectarium

New Orleans in a Day | Things to Do in 24 Hours

Speaking of the Aquarium, the sprawling compound on the riverfront will keep you and your family enthralled with its walk-through tunnel, otters, penguins, sea turtles, a stingray touch pool, and an expansive replica of an offshore oil rig submerged in 400,000 gallons of water.

On the other side of the French Quarter, the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, located in the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street, is packed with bug-centric interactive exhibits. Sample a cricket chocolate chip cookie at the cafeteria, or let the butterflies land on your head in the spectacular butterfly garden.

Spend The Afternoon At A Museum

New Orleans has many museums to explore all over the city, the most popular being the National World War II Museum. If history isnt your thing, try art instead over at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Or, if youre looking for something eclectic, check out the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum in the French Quarter. While its small, this quirky and unique museum is an ode to medical oddities of the past and questionable 19th-century medical practices. The museum is in a real 19th-century apothecary, and admission is only $5, so its great for those on a budget. Make sure to plan your visit to attend their daily guided tour, only at 1 pm each day, so that youll get an in-depth explanation of the medical instruments and medicines that they have there. Its well worth it to be there for the guided tour, and its included in the price of admission. Please also note that the museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

If youre still looking for more museums to visit, New Orleans has plenty! Just a few include the New Orleans African American Museum, located in the historic Tremé neighborhood, the oldest-surviving black community in the country, as well as The McKenna Museum of African-American Art, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

Where Did We Eat

New Orleans Tourist Traps and Things to Avoid

908 Bourbon St.New Orleans, LA 70116

A small, cozy sandwich shop where you order at the counter, dine-in, or take away. Great poboys, of course.

301 Royal StreetNew Orleans, LA 70130

We found this restaurant while meandering around the French Quarter. The food here was great, served promptly, and by a pleasant and entertaining waiter.

500 Chartres St.New Orleans, LA

We had a good meal here, and The Napoleon House was a perfect place to hide from the rain.

400 Dauphine StreetNew Orleans, LA 70112

This is genuinely Deja Vue for us. Weve returned here many times for a quick breakfast in the mornings over the last few years. Good solid food and a comfortable place to hang out. Deja Vu usually is open 24 hours a day.

An interesting thing about this place is that Ellen Degeneres got her start here when Clydes Comedy Corner was in this building.

Again, a good-tasting and filling breakfast restaurant at great prices and open 24-hours a day.

Indoor Activities For A Rainy Day In New Orleans

1. Take in a movie. Youve got a plethora of great options for this one: The Theaters at Canal Place has amazing truffle popcorn, Prytania Theatre has a cozy, hometown feel, and Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center always has thought-provoking entertainment on tap.

2. Work on your moves. Take a dance class! Some class ideas: bounce fitness at Dancing Grounds, salsa at Dance Quarter, swing dance at NOLA Jitterbugs or burlesque at Crescent Lotus. I recently tried the Make it Reyn class at Reyn Studios and it was an hour of frenzied, fun dancing that made me forget I was exercising.

3. Get crafty. Enroll in an arts and crafts class. I took a Copperplate Calligraphy class this summer at New Orleans School of Art and Craft and it was such a great experience unfortunately, there was a fire this summer that destroyed the original location, but they are in the process of relocating and you can see updates on their website. Other options are New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts and New Orleans School of Metalsmithing.

4. Indulge in some retail therapy. Check out the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, which features outlet retailers like Last Call by Neiman Marcus, Gap Outlet, Coach, and much more. For more shopping, head to The Shops at Canal Place. Its in the same location as the movie theater and features higher-end retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue, J.Crew, and Anthropologie.

6. Treat yourself! Zone out and enjoy a spa service like a mani/pedi at Buff Beauty Bar or Amys Nails.

Time To Go Home Already

The rain had let up for our last day in New Orleans, but it was waiting for us at the airport when we left that day. What a bumpy ride! On the bright side, the plane was only half full, and the flight home is not even an hour long. It was an excellent trip to New Orleans for us.

We scouted out a few RV parks, and next time, well travel by RV instead of air. Right now, were planning a trip to Las Vegas by air again, though.

The New Orleans Voodoo Museum

Voodoo comes with its own very real culture and history, one thats impacted New Orleans a great deal. While the causal tourists might merely want to stop into a voodoo shop for a gris-gris bag to take home as a souvenir, if you actually want to learn a thing or two, you might want to stop into the New Orleans Voodoo Museum, too. The small museum features relics and paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. There are many New Orleans Voodoo Tours to consider.

St Louis Cemetery No 1

New Orleans Travel Guide 4K

While Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 is old, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is older, established in the late 1700s. Part of a group of three cemeteries , St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is purported to be the final resting place of such historic characters as voodoo priestess Marie Laveau and slave owner Delphine LaLaurie. Nicholas Cage has also famously purchased a plot here. To see St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, a tour is required, but you can visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 without a tour, and see the tombs there that date back to the 1850s.
