Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center
If you find yourself short on time and need something to do, then you may want to check out the Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center. No, its not on top of Mount Washington! Its right in the heart of North Conway. You can easily take an hour and explore this small but fascinating weather museum.
The kids can shoot off some air cannons, put your hand into a mini tornado and learn all about the weather on top of Mount Washington. They have a mock observatory shack that emulates what the winds can be like up on top of the mountain. Check out their website and video below to learn more.
Hiking Mt Washington: Tuckerman Ravine Trail
Alex and I parked, took a quick bathroom break, checked the map at the center, and started hiking! We began around 8am. The first section, 2.4 miles, is a gradual uphill climb. We saw families climbing and people with dogs hiking up the trail. Eventually, we reached Hermit Lake Shelters. The shelters are a campsite and are also the last bathroom facilities on the trail. We took a short break there, then continued on to the nearby hand pump to fill-up our water bottles. It was the most refreshing, cold water that we have ever had, and not just because we were already thirsty!
At this point, most families with younger children turned back around, and did not continue further up the trail. We were now at the base of the ravine and the path would become steeper and a lot narrower. Alex and I continued on, but we did take breaks along the way.
Tuckerman Ravine is beautiful! But as the path narrowed and we climbed higher, it did get a little scary. The edge of the path quickly drops off, and as someone who is afraid of heights, it freaked me out a little. However, as long as you stay on the path, youll be fine! I was happy with our decision not to climb in the rain the day before, because I could imagine, in the rain, the path becoming slippery and dangerous.

Mount Washington In The White Mountains
It’s the highest mountain in northeastern North America: 6,288-foot Mount Washington. Native Americans called it “Agiocochook” and didn’t climb it, believing that its summit was the home of the Great Spirit. Giovanni da Verrazano was the first European to see it, from the waters off New Hampshire’s seacoast, in 1524. Darby Field was the first European settler to climb it, in 1642.
Today its summit, a State Park, is visited by over a quarter of a million people from all over the world each year. From there, on a clear day, it’s often possible to see into five states – New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York – even into Canada.
Early settlers Abel Crawford and his son, Ethan Allen Crawford, built the first footpath to the summit in 1819 today it is the oldest continuously maintained footpath in the US. Ethan Allen Crawford later improved the path, making it a bridle path for horses, and completing the work in 1840.
In 1861, when the Mount Washington Auto Road opened as a carriage road, it was considered the nation’s first man-made tourist attractions.
The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first rack and pinion railroad, was completed eight years later. When the railway’s builder, Sylvester Marsh, first petitioned the New Hampshire Legislature for the right to build the railway, they were so skeptical of the project’s feasibility that they granted him the right to build “the railway to the moon.”

If you want to take the easy way up, riding the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, also known as the Cog, is the best way to do it. It is the worlds first mountain-climbing cog railway. The Cog is the second steepest rack railway in the world, with an average grade of more than 25 percent and a maximum grade of 37.41 percent. This scenic ride starts in Bretton Woods, NH and lets you travel with peace of mind. It takes 3 hours round trip. The train departs daily from May through November. The railway is approximately 3 miles long. Reservations are highly recommended, especially due to Covid-19 distancing requirements.

Winter Things To Do In The Mount Washington Valley Nh
The Mount Washington Valley, NH is one of the countrys earliest winter resort region. This area surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest is a year-round vacation destination. One of the Valleys greatest assets is the variety of winter activities available within a small geographic area.

Overall Advice For Hiking Mt Washington
- Pack layers! It gets colder and winder as you climb. We started the hike in shorts, but when we got to the top, we both put on sweatshirts and pants! Weather changes fast on Mt Washington!
- If you hike, pack supplies. Food, water, survival supplies, etc. Always prepare!
- Bring money! We bought food at the snack bar on top of the mountain. And we needed to pay for the van to return to our car. You may plan on hiking back down, but you may be tired or the weather could worsen, so have a backup plan.
- People have died on this mountain. Dont overestimate your own abilities and use common sense. The weather may look perfect but it can and will change. Once again, be prepared for the worst case scenario.
- If you dont want to hike, you can always drive or take the cog railway! But we highly recommend ascending Mt Washington one way or another!
Overall, we had a great trip to Lincoln, NH and we really enjoyed hiking Mt Washington!

A visit to Mount Washington in early summer is well rewarded. Wonderful arrays of blooms stand out in sharp contrast to its green forests and the broken gray rocks of the alpine zone.
TravelingMom Tip: Do not stray from the trails when visiting alpine zones. The vegetation that adapted to the poor soil, freezing temperatures, and harsh wind may appear tough and durable but in fact, it is a very fragile environment. Stay on the trails! One misplaced step can destroy what has taken hundreds of years to establish.

New Hampshires Top Pet Friendly Attraction: Mount Washington
The native people who inhabited this area believed that The Great Spirit lived atop what is now known as Mount Washington and kept the peak shrouded in clouds. No matter what your beliefs, this is a mystical place where the weather has such fury it can leave you feeling insignificant and wondering whether the gods have turned against you.
The wind at the summit exceeds hurricane force more than 100 days a year. The peak is enveloped in clouds 60% of the time. Snow can fall year round, and nearly 300 inches settle here each year. So, seeing this mountain in jeans and t-shirts, on a perfectly sunny day with a mild breeze, was better than we could have hoped for but its exactly what we got! And the views were unbelievable.
Getting to the top of Mount Washington is a bit of an adventure in itself! From the base lodge at 1,563 feet in elevation, the climb is 4,725 feet to the 6,288-foot peak.
For obvious reasons, we opted to drive up, and noticed the weather report for the summit as we passed through the toll booth Temperature: 48 degrees, Wind: 15 miles per hour, Visibility: 80 miles.
Once you reach the top, there are some exhibits to enjoy in addition to the incredible views. Set within the 750,000-acre White Mountain National Forest, the 60 acres surrounding the peak are designated as Washington Mountain State Park. And though pets are not allowed in any of the buildings, its easy to take turns stepping inside to look around.
