Freehold Raceway Freehold New Jersey
Freehold Raceway is a half-mile racetrack in Freehold Borough that has been hosting horseracing since the 1830s, making it the oldest racecourse in the country. The first annual fair with harness racing was held in 1853 by the Monmouth County Agricultural Society, and the track has been drawing crowds to enjoy a variety of horse racing ever since. Popular events over the years have included the annual Cane Pace, a harness race run since 1955, which became the first leg in the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers. Today, the Freehold Raceway has two distinct racing seasons from January through May and September through December, and host two major events per year.

Van Vleck House And Garden
I highly recommend combining Van Vleck House and Garden together with Presby Memorial Iris Garden and Kips Castle . Van Vleck is free to visit. Their garden is lovely. Just large enough to explore fully in a single visit. They also offer a variety of programs for children and adults. You can read about our most recent visit there. We have gone back to Van Vleck House and Garden throughout many seasons, with various family members. It is always a pleasure to walk through the garden.
Check Out A Cranberry Bog
Just a short drive down a dirt-and-gravel road delivers you back in time to a restored cranberry farm from the 1870s. At the 90-acre Cloverdale Farm County Park in Barnegat, a replica of the original farmhouse that today serves as the visitor center introduces visitors to the farms history. Then its off on a 1.4-mile, level, sandy, self-guided trail past the cranberry sorting house and around several cranberry bogs. Be sure to print out the self-guided nature-trail map before you go . Top 10 Memorial Day Weekend Events In Nj For The Whole Family
Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial kick-off to summer and something weve all been looking forward to since the first snowflake fell a few months ago. From BBQs to parades to pool parties, napkin throwing at DJais , MDW is a big deal in New Jersey.
But lets not forget why the day exists in the first place. Its a day to remember and pay tribute to those that died while serving our country and we thank them all for their service.
Aside from the parades, flag-waving, and honoring our troops, there is so much to do in the great Garden State to start off everyones favorite season.
If you have kids, this is a great weekend to give them a little taste of summer even though there are still a few weeks left of school. You can go for hikes in North Jersey, walk the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore, and visit some of the most beautiful parks in Central Jersey.
Its easy to pack up the car and head to the shore along with everyone else in the state. And, when I say easy, I mean the thought of it. There is nothing easy about sitting in hours of traffic on the Parkway. If thats your tradition then more power to you.
If youre not an MDW shore family, heres a list of the top 10 events happening that weekend in the Garden State that the whole family can participate in:
Johnson Park In Highland Park Nj
We have recently discovered Johnson Park. Located in Middlesex County, it is a sprawling, 473 acre park and home to Johnson Park Zoo. The zoo is an animal haven. You can purchase animal feed, feed the animals, walk along the promenade, play in the park, and more. Lots to explore there! I would combine it with a visit to the Zimmerli Museum . I wasnt able to find a website for this park, but you can read more about our visit HERE.

Relive That Famed Duel
Experience the Hamilton-Burr saga in two acts. Up along the cliff that rises north of the Lincoln Tunnel helix, along a quiet, shady street in Weehawken with a postcard view of Manhattan, is a vest-pocket memorial park with a bust of Alexander Hamilton. It was below this spot in 1804, on the dueling grounds down near the Hudson River, that Aaron Burr fired the shot that still rings so loudly on Broadway, and that killed Hamilton. Drive a little more than an hour south, and you can see where Burr eventually ended up 32 ignominious years laterburied in Princeton Cemetery. KC

For the thrill of the crossing, take Route 15 North to Route 206 North toward Layton, and follow the signs to the bridge. KS
