St Stephen’s Episcopal Church Milledgeville Georgia

Built back in the year 1841 and consecrated in 1843, the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Milledgeville, Georgia played a part in the history of the South. General Shermans troops caused quite a bit of damage to the beautiful church in November of 1864 during the infamous March to the Sea, ransacking the building, burning pews for firewood, pouring molasses into the organ pipes, and stabling horses inside. Further destruction was caused by the igniting the nearby armory. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located in the historic Statehouse Square, has since been rebuilt and still stands as a beautiful old church.

Best Things To Do In Milledgeville

While now the county seat of Baldwin County, Milledgeville Georgia was founded in 1804 as the states new capital.

It was built on land cleared of its native American population and largely constructed using slave labor. This perhaps explains why it was stripped of its status as state capital in 1868 during the post-civil war Reconstruction period.

Although temporarily occupied by General Sherman during the civil war, the 200-year-old city survived largely unscathed.

With a motto of capitols, columns and culture, you know you can expect plenty of historic southern-style architecture and a great array of attractions, from museums to hiking trails.

St Stephens Episcopal Church

Milledgeville | Hometown Georgia

St Stephens Episcopal Church was built in Milledgevilles heyday as Georgias capital. It also plays an important role in the citys Civil War history.

The church is located in Statehouse Square. It was built in 1843 in Rural Gothic style. This means that it has a lot of woodwork both inside and outside. You will also find beautiful stained glass that was added after the civil war.

It wouldnt likely have survived if it hadnt been there before. It was used to house General Shermans horses while its pews were used for firewood. Another deliberate act was to damage its organ pipes with molasses.

Georgia’s Old Capital Museum is located on the ground floor of the Old Statehouse in Milledgeville Georgia. Galleries cover Pre-historic Georgia through Reconstruction. A must-see for everyone!

The old capitol building is located in the original building at what is now a military school. Free parking is available in front near the church next door. I like to visit former state capitols and was surprised with how much of Georgia’s history was presented here. I also learned that Oliver Hardy of Laurel and Hardy fame grew up in this town before leaving to become a movie star. Upstairs you can still visit the old senate chambers but it is used for events now and only a few paintings are on the walls to represent its bygone days of political history. There is an elevator to the upstairs area if needed and the walk from the parking area to the old capitol building is a good stroll if walking is an issue. A few plaques are out front detailing some of its history. I was impressed with this place being only one of two Gothic styled capitol buildings that were ever built .
