Go Ape Zip Line And Treetop Adventure

Alxcrs / Shutterstock

The Go Ape Zip Line and Treetop Adventure is one of the most fun things to do in Memphis.

Taking you high into the trees of Tennessees natural scenery, its sure to get your blood pumping as you climb, swing, jump and zip through the canopies of Shelby Forest.

Instructors will guide you through the basics of using your pulleys and harnesses.

Once you understand how to move, youll be given free reign in the trees to go ape.

Do you want to zip at high speeds until youre breathless with exhilaration?

Do you want to challenge yourself with an obstacle course made of rope ladders, net bridges and swinging vines?

The choice is yours, but theyre equally fun!

The one downside of Go Ape Zip Line and Treetop Adventure is that it isnt suitable for children under 10 years old.

Its meant for older kids and adults, so your littlest monkeys will need to sit this one out.

If everyone passes the age line, however, its a great way to bond as a family.

Anyone can have movie nights.

How many moms and dads take their kids swinging through the trees like Tarzan?

National Civil Rights Museum Downtown Memphis

The National Civil Rights Museum should be your very first stop when you come to Memphis, and it will not disappoint. The National Civil Rights Museum is a wonderful historically accurate museum that depicts the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement.

The museum is located in the old Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King stayed and was killed when he was in Memphis to help and support the striking sanitation workers.

The museum focuses on the civil rights struggles of African-Americans, but it has expanded to that of other groups.

The museum is filled with history, emotions, incredible photos, mementos, peoples stories, along with archival video and audio footage.

The stories of slavery in our nation and of the civil rights movement are gut-wrenching and I need my daughter to understand how far we have come.

I bring my daughter once a year to ensure she knows her history so she will appreciate the freedoms she currently has because of the brave men and women who came before her.

Slave Haven Downtown Memphis

Slave Haven was once the home of Jacob Burkle, a German immigrant who used his home as a haven for slaves escaping along the underground railroad. The home has now been turned into an underground railroad museum.

Although it may not look like much from the outside, the museum, and really its curators and guides, packs a big punch. Your tour starts with a look at the middle passage, the transport of slaves from Africa to the United States.

The tour continues with an in-depth look at the clues and symbols slaves used to communicate the path to freedom from the hymns to the symbols embedded in quilts.

You will also learn about stereotypes that have been used to make black people seem and look inferior. The last stop on the tour is to see actual crawl spaces slaves used to escape from the slave catchers.

I took my mom and daughter to visit Slave Haven and it was quite an eye-opening experience and just made me so thankful for how we have come but how far we still have to go.

Walk It Off In Shelby Farms Park

After good Memphis eating, we were glad to walk it off in Shelby Farms Park, a free city park of thousands of acres. We explored the Parks pretty lakes, bike, and walking trails, and saw families flying kites, walking dogs, and picnicking. While we didnt try boating, ziplining, or yoga on the lawn, all were available and would be a great way for kids to burn off some extra energy. There is even a buffalo herd at Shelby Farms Park.

Discover The Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo is what first drew us to the area for our Memphis trip this summer. With exhibits including giant pandas, polar bears, and lions, the zoo was definitely the highlight of the trip for my kids. The scale of the zoo is apparent when you walk up and see the giant, Egyptian-style entrance gates, complete with an obelisk. Highlights of our visit included a sea lion show and camel rides for the kids. We especially loved the Animals of the Night building, which reverses nighttime and daytime light patterns so visitors can see nocturnal animals when they are active.

The Memphis Zoo is huge, so plan on it being an all-day experience. With several restaurants, a small playground, and a splash pad, there are plenty of areas for young families to take breaks. If you’re a member of your local AZA-accredited zoo, show your membership card for a discount on admission.
