South Main Arts District

Located along the southern border of downtown Memphis, the South Main Arts District is one of the most iconic locations in the city.

You might even recognize it before you go.

Its been featured in multiple Hollywood films, including Walk the Line, Hustle and Flow, Great Balls of Fire and Elizabethtown.

What makes South Main so special?

For starters, it has an old-fashioned look with a daily trolley winding through brick shopfronts and colonial townhouses.

It also has an artistic edge with painted murals on the walls and vendors selling their arts and crafts on the sidewalk.

Theres fun stuff to do, too.

You can grab a bite to eat at one of the local, family-owned diners, or you can hop on the trolley and visit one of the nearby museums.

Theres a lot to celebrate about the heritage of Tennessee, and its on full display in local museums.

The South Main Arts District is one of the best things to do in Memphis.

It might not be as loud and flashy as some of the other tourist attractions on this list, but if youre looking for the biggest points of interest in the city, you wont want to miss it.

Besides, theres nothing wrong with enjoying some low-key activities while youre relaxing on a Tennessee vacation!

Things To Do In Memphis Tennessee: Dixon Gallery & Gardens

In the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, humans and nature compete in creating breathtaking beauty. Established in 1976, this art museum boasts one of the best collections of impressionist art in the country with works by Monet, Degas, Pissarro, and others. The collection is housed in the home of the late Hugo and Margaret Dixon, who gifted the house and spectacular gardens to the city of Memphis.

This small museum with its extremely rich collection of art often sends parts of the collection on the road as visiting exhibits. After enjoying the art, stroll through the manicured sculpture gardens with a number of Greco-Roman sculptures. The meticulously landscaped English Garden is surrounded by smaller, more intimate but equally formal spaces.

National Civil Rights Museum

Gino Santa Maria / Shutterstock

Memphis was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, especially after the assassination of Martin Luther King at a Memphis motel in 1968.

Rather than brushing over its ugly heritage, the city decided to use the motel as a foundation for cultural and historical education, and the National Civil Rights Museum was built around it.

Youll need several hours to take in everything at the museum, and even that might not be enough.

Its filled with photos, documents, artifacts and exhibitions that showcase the long and painful struggle for equal rights in Tennessee.

Theres a life-sized replica of a bus that was destroyed by white supremacists during the Freedom Rides.

There are audio listening posts that detail various boycotts and sit-ins of activists fighting for justice.

It can be difficult to see and listen to these things.

However, the Civil Rights Movement is an important part of our heritage that shouldnt be forgotten, and this Memphis museum is dedicated to the preservation of history and the education of its visitors.

Visit the National Civil Rights Museum if youre looking for unforgettable places to see in Memphis.

Itll be a painful but eye-opening experience, and itll stick with you long after you return home from Tennessee.

Make Your Own Musical Phd

Things to do in Memphis this weekend!

There are so many places to learn about the history of music in Memphis, and Stax Museum is the place to start you can visit on your own or on this awesome Big Mojo bus tour we took a few years back. Though the original Stax was torn down in the late 80s, the museum serves as a legacy to its glory years. Nearby, the Blues Hall of Fame Museum also provides a history lesson to Memphis melodic past with an extensive music collection of both hits and rare finds for visitors to dip into via its various high-tech listening stations.

Dont pass on a stop at Sun Studio, whose legacy was cemented by a jam session with Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash that was recorded and later dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet. The small studio has remained relatively unchanged and is open daily for tours.

In between, they swim around in the lobby pond. This is free to check out and so fun, especially with kids. I even got to be an Honorary Duckmaster once!

Memphis Rock N Soul Museum

Located on Beale Street in Downtown Memphis, the Rock n Soul Museum takes you through the history of Memphis rock and soul music starting from the rural field hollers and porch music of the sharecroppers through to the impact of the Civil Rights Movement on the city and its artists. The museum tells the story about how these gifted artists were able to overcome socioeconomic and racial barriers and create music that was able to start bringing people together. The exhibits include three audio-visual programs, over 30 instruments, and 40 costumes. While you are there, you can listen to a great audio guide with over 300 minutes of information. Explore Memphis Musical History

When people think of Memphis, they often think of the citys long connection with the music industry. At the start of the 1900s, Memphis was one of the hubs of African-American commerce and culture. Enslaved blacks passed down traditional African musical styles through the generations, and this became the basis for many 20th century musicians such as W.C. Handy, also known as the Father of Blues, who played this unique musical style in the clubs on Beale Street with his band way back in 1909.

It was here on Beale Street that the electric guitar made its debut in 1945 and rock and roll got its start. The music industry went from strength to strength and musical legends such as Roy Orbison. Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins recorded songs in the citys recording studios.

Music genres as diverse as rhythm and blues, soul, gospel, and rock and roll have roots in Memphis and there are a few places that every music lover must visit on a trip here including the Blues Hall of Fame, the Rock and Soul Museum, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
