From Beale Street To County Schools Staying Safe In The Pandemic During Labor Day
MEMPHIS, Tenn. Labor Day weekend is in full swing across the Mid-South from concerts to festivals. While COVID-19 forced the postponement of some events, others are going on as scheduled.
As many try to make the most of their Labor Day weekend, a battle is underway to keep mask requirements in school, all while coronavirus cases continue to rise across the region.
Lurking among the fray of people on Beale Street is the threat of the coronavirus, which is a concern for tourists like Angela Dowdy.
I definitely worry about it. I still keep my distance from people, she said. Its more of distance thing than it is a mask thing. I like to make sure that we stay more distant than I would normally.
Shelby County is averaging 665 coronavirus cases over the last week. Despite the statistics, organizers of the Beale Street Cigar Festival decided to move forward with their event.
My heart goes out to all that have suffered economically and physically and health wise from the pandemic, but in the same breath, we want people to know that there is still life, and to come out and have a good time, said Robb Hunter, organizer of the festival. We just want to be safe and smart about it.
Following the holiday, students will no longer be able to opt out of wearing masks in schools in Shelby County, after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order, which blocks Tennessee Gov. Bill Lees executive order.

Labor Day Weekend Visit
We’re traveling to Memphis next weekend and staying a little out of town at the Park Place. We will have a car. I’m seeing a festival downtown on Peabody Street which looks really large. Is this an event we should try to take in or avoid?
Also, I didn’t prebuy tickets to Graceland. Thinking we might go on Monday if they are open or Tuesday if they we need to. Should I prebuy? If so, which day?
Also, are we going to have problems seeing other sites or getting into restaurants on Beale Street with this festival going on? Thanks.
I imagine Graceland will be open all weekend. Being a holiday weekend, it wouldn’t hurt to buy tickets in advance just to be sure. I would say the least busy day of the weekend would be Monday, Labor Day, since lots of visitors might be heading home by then. If you have time and want to wait until that Tuesday, I bet it would be completely dead around there.
I think the festival might be fun to take in if you are planning to venture downtown and walk around on Beale anyway. I’ve personally never been to it. Of course, this is likely to make the restaurants more crowded, but I wouldn’t think it would affect the other tourist attractions too much. Parking will also be at a premium downtown, especially around Beale. You can park away from Beale and take the trolley down Main Street to avoid the higher parking costs and the hassle.

What To Do Labor Day Weekend 2016
I can remember swimming in my grandparents pool till dusk while the adults sat in aluminum lawn chairs drinking homemade daiquiris while they waited on the crawfish or shrimp or crabs to boil. The Labor Days of my childhood were a chance to see out-of-town cousins, stay up past our bedtimes, and swim till our skin was prune-like. I had no concept of work, of this thing they called labor. It was something that adults did, not carefree children like me.
As an adult, I have a new appreciation of Labor Day. I still love this holiday, but for different reasons. My cousins and I are grown, with children of our own, and my grandparents home where we gathered on those warm-weather occasions was swept away by the winds and water of Katrina. Yet now, I recall those gatherings with not only nostalgia but a sense of understanding. What appeared to me as nothing more than a backyard party was a celebration of something much more meaningful: Accomplishment, progress, and a sense of purpose. But it also gave us reason to pause, to stop and enjoy what we have worked towards to rest.

Memphis Labor Day Weekend
Hey Guyz! My husband and I are traveling from South Arkansas to Memphis on Friday, September 2nd. We have made reservations at the Wyndham Memphis Garden despite some bad reviews I have read. We will be staying there Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is my 21st birthday and we plan on going to Platinum Plus one night. My questions are: What else is there to do? We are going to hit up Beale Street one night also so which night is best to go to Platinum and which night is best for Beale Street? We plan on arriving Friday around 5, resting and then grabbing a bite to eat and finding something to do. We are driving there but plan on doing alot of drinking. How far is the Wyndham from Beale Street? Is it within walking distance? Do they have trollies, cabs, ect? If so, what is the fee? And also what do you think about the Wyndham? Has anyone stayed there before? I would really really appreciate anyone who has any info for me! Thanks. Summer
P.S. What bars and clubs aside from Beale St do you recommend? We are into hip hop, country and rock music. Not too much techno and heavy metal. Thanks 🙂
It’s not every day I read a post from someone mentioning Platinum. That’s cool.
Platinum is open late, really late, as are the clubs on Beale. You could certainly do both in one night.
If you don’t want to drive to Platinum you could get a taxi but I’m sure it would cost a bit. You could also drive down to the Tunica casinos what night.
