The Upper Peninsula Childrens Museum is a hands-on educational museum designed to engage families in programs about the arts, science, health, and global issues like the environment. Founders of the museum set-out on a mission to create equal opportunity learning for anyone in the community to take part in with interactive programs and exhibits to get the community involved in the arts and science around them. During initial planning, children helped design the facility with the Design-O-Saurus program. From there, the museum added The World of Science and Nature and two more exhibit halls and now features eight major exhibits.

The conditions were awesome and the view of lake superior was amazing! The city of Marquette is really cool with a ton of options for lodging and restaurants. Enjoyed the Ore Dock brewery-great local beers and the food was great at the Vierling and Stein house. The history in Marquette is extremely interesting. Enjoyed a Division 1 hockey game at Northern Michigan University which is in town. Amazing place with a lot to do. We will definitely be back.
About The John Muir Park Segment Of The Ice Age Trail
The Ice Age Trail segment that the Marquette County Chapter tends to is not only beautiful, but also exceptionally rich in history. The John Muir Park Segment winds through the boyhood home of John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club and often called the father of our national parks.
Ennis Lake and the surrounding prairies, meadows and woodlands of the John Muir Park Segment inspired a young John Muir to gain an appreciation and respect for nature.

The Lower Harbor Ore Dock was used from 1932 to 1971 and is a city landmark.
The first time I visited Marquette, I saw mostly Yooper Land.
I chuckled at a 10-foot mosquito, giant chainsaw and packages of Roadkill Helper. I noted the best-sellers in the bookstore window: “A Look at Life From a Deer Stand” and “Leap of Faith 2: God Loves Packer Fans.”
This is the Marquette that’s sports-crazy, hunting-happy and tough as nails, with a population descended from Cornish, Finnish and Italian immigrants who could put up with the rigors of iron mines and, later, their closings.
A few years later, I saw cosmopolitan Marquette. Elegant townhouses had sprouted along its harbor on Lake Superior, and an exhibit of art doors lined jogging paths like giant dominoes. I shopped in a gallery and bought a picnic lunch at the food co-op.
That’s the Marquette named a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which cited its arts and architecture and called it “a must-see for travelers looking to get off the beaten path.”
It’s so off the beaten path that many people from Lower Michigan never make it there nearly 500 miles and Lake Michigan separate Marquette fromDetroit.
The thickly forested U.P. is the Alaska of Michigan, to whichit contributes only 3 percent of the state’s population. Locals think they suffer the Lower 48’s longest winter and heaviest snowfalls, and they’re almost right.
On Lower Harbor, Mattson Park hosts the big city festivals.
Ellwood A Mattson Lower Harbor Park
The Ellwood A. Mattson Lower Harbor Park, or lower harbor to the locals, is a beachfront park that is a short walk from Downtown Marquette, perfect for a planned or spontaneous trip to the beach during your day in the town. The Lower Harbor park is a great spot to get a full view of the famous ore dock.

Located in the northern reaches of Michigans Upper Peninsula and on the shores of Lake Superior, one of Michigans great lakes, youll find Marquette, Michigan.
Yes, it will feel like youve driven far enough to be in Canada, but I promise youre still in the United States.
Known for Northern Michigan University, mountain biking, surfing, breweries, iron ore heritage trail, maritime history, northern lights and so much more. The Marquette area is so much more than you would ever expect.
There is a rich history and the downtown area is quite lovely, but, in my opinion its the outdoor recreation that really draws people to Marquette Michigan.
Important editors note: In my opinion, the best time to visit Marquette is in the summer or fall. Im not a big fan of winter and would prefer to be far away from cold and snow. That being said lots of people love it here in the winter months. Plan accordingly though if you visit in the winter because it will be COLD.
However, after my recent visit to Marquette, I realized why you only have to be a little crazy to fall in love with the UP.
During my trip, I fell in love with Michigans U.P. all over again. It may not be THE place for me to live year round, but it is absolutely wonderful to visit in Summer and Fall.
If you are a fan of snow sports then you will LOVE it during that season as well.
