When we go back to visit my grandmother, we always take a quick trip to Matter Park to walk through the gardens and then play at Friendship park. Plus when you do the drive through Matter Park at the holiday time, you’ll see a great light show!

Marion Public Library & Museum Marion In

The Marion Public Library and Museum is home to a large collection of memorabilia and artifacts related to the history of Indianas Grant County. The History Made Here exhibit showcases the history of the natural gas boom that took place in the east-central part of the state and the effects it had on the communities in the county. Other exhibits on display in the Marion Public Library and Museum include the made in Marion 1952 Crosley Super Sport car, a military history exhibit featuring uniforms and photos, a Victorian exhibit, vintage clothing, childrens toys, and antique appliances.

National Home For Disabled Volunteer Soldiers

On July 23, 1888, with increasing number of residents at the six HDVS, Congress established a seventh home in Grant County . It is known as the . Congress allotted an appropriation of $200,000 for construction, while Grant County residents provided a natural gas supply for heating and lighting. Marion was selected as a site for the new branch due to the availability of natural gas and the political support of Colonel George Washington Steele, US Congressman serving from 1880 to 1890.

This facility is now a part of the Veterans Administration Northern Indiana Health Care System, a dual-campus facility associated with the former VA Medical Center Fort Wayne. In the early 21st century, the original treatment hospital, built in 1889, the greenhouse, and cadet quarters are scheduled for demolition. There has been a lack of public support for funding restoration of these buildings. As they do not meet current standards, the Veterans Administration plans to demolish the buildings and replace them.

Civil War And Late 19th Century Industry

During the American Civil War, Indiana became politically influential and played an important role in the affairs of the nation. Indiana was the first western state to mobilize for the United States in the war, and soldiers from Indiana participated in all the war’s major engagements. The state provided 126 infantry regiments, 26 batteries of artillery and 13 regiments of cavalry to the Union.

In 1861, Indiana was assigned a quota of 7,500 men to join the Union Army. So many volunteered in the first call that thousands had to be turned away. Before the war ended, Indiana had contributed 208,367 men. Casualties were over 35% among these men: 24,416 lost their lives and over 50,000 more were wounded. The only Civil War conflicts fought in Indiana were the Newburgh Raid, a bloodless capture of the city and the Battle of Corydon, which occurred during Morgan’s Raid leaving 15 dead, 40 wounded, and 355 captured.
