Lulu Lobster Boat Tour

10 Best Things to do in Maine with kids on a family vacation

Bar HarborArea

Boat tours are a fantastic way to spend some of your time in Maine. These tours allow you to get out on the beautiful waters that surround Maine and see the area from a different point of view. They are often also educational.

One of our favorite Maine boat tours is the LuLu Lobster Boat Tour. This awesome experience allows guests to ride aboard an actual lobster boat. The boat takes passengers out around Egg Rock Lighthouse, while the tour guide offers a wealth of information on lobsters. At one point, the boat is stopped and lobster traps are pulled out of the water. When this happens, guests are invited to get up close and touch or hold the lobsters if they like.

This is a memorable and educational experience that you arent likely to find elsewhere, so be sure to take advantage while you can.

Here Is My List Of Things I Think Everyone Who Visits Portland Maine Should Check Out

These schooners are a part of history and they are so quaint and charming. I had never been on one before. Seeing the sunset over the water is breathtaking. The crew is kind, engaging and entertaining. The ride is smooth and its hard not to feel relaxed and free on this sail. I recommend for anyone who wants to enjoy life and be present in the moment. You definitely dont want to miss this moment. We went with our tween and teen girls, I would definitely suggest taking a small picnic to eat and if you want to make it a romantic evening with your favorite guy or lady bring along a cheese plate and some wine or champagne and watch the sunset with your favorite person.

So much awesome information and history. You get a complete historical tour of the entire town and bonus, you get to take a bus into the cove. My favorite part was learning all about Portland from our knowledgeable and good-humored tour guide. It was especially nice because it was our very first trip to Portland and we didnt know a lot about the area. It was interactive and a lot of fun going through the town as the tour engaged with the people of the Portland. My only suggestion would be to make sure that you wear the provided life vests when you enter the cove as a safety measure in case of bad weather. The day we took our tour the weather was calm.

For Roughing It: Mt Katahdin And Baxter State Park

Top 10 Things for Families to do in Maine

Baxter State Park is Maines largest expanse of untamed public wilderness. With almost 210,000 acres to explore, families can combine front-country car camping with backcountry adventure around Mt. Katahdin, the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. Baxters scope and size is on a national park scale, but unlike national parks, almost every lake, pond, waterfall and stream is accessible only by trail. In very few places in Baxter can you drive up to see anything, and even then, you must drive miles upon miles on dirt roads.

I suggest car camping at one of Baxters campgrounds as a home base. If you dont want to camp at all, you can opt to stay in Millinocket, though youll be commuting each day into the park. If summiting Mt. Katahdin is on your to-do list, do it early in your trip while youre still fresh. Its 5 1/2 miles from the Roaring Brook Campground, and it took our family of seasoned hikers 12 hours to complete the round trip. The trail is extremely strenuous, and the final mile of the summit hike is along a knife edge with some scary-looking drops. If you go, bring tons of water and a means of filtering more on the trail . Also, bring headlamps in case youre caught hiking after dark. If you want an easier hike, try the 3 miles to Chimney Pond for great views of the peak.

Where Are The Best Beaches In Maine For A Family Vacation

Driving up the coast from New Hampshire and Massachusetts, the sandy beaches in York are some of the first Maine beaches that you will discover on your Maine road trip.

York has a reputation for being one of the most family-friendly areas along the coast of Maine due to its classic beach arcade, Fun-o-Rama, just steps from the sand at Short Sands Beach.

Kids love taking a break from the sun and the waves to play a game of pinball. Parents are sure to feel nostalgic challenging their kids to a couple of rounds of Skee-Ball for only a quarter each round.

No trip to the beach is complete without a sweet treat. Continue to enjoy York Beachs nostalgic beach vibe by watching the taffy pull in the window of The Goldenrod.

The smell of molasses wafts through the air bringing you right back to your childhood trips to the beach. We simply couldnt resist buying a package.

This taffy is some of the chewiest saltwater taffy that I have ever enjoyed. Since you are in Maine, be sure to get some blueberry taffy, its the best!

Another great beach option is Ogunquit. The more upscale village of Ogunquit is just a short 20-minute drive up Shore Road through Cape Neddick from York. There are many resorts in Ogunquit. Its a busy place in the summer months.

Even if you do not stay in Ogunquit, do make sure to take a walk at . Its of the best coastal walks in the entire state of Maine. There are several small coves along the Marginal Way where families can enjoy a swim.
