Getting Around/car Rental In Louisville

Stephen’s Best Place In America: Louisville, KY

Booked through Costco Travel for the free extra driver and free cancellation plus this is the best price that we saw from our research. Economy car for 2 days was $41.87, which is pretty decent from our experience.

We also opted to pick up the car on Friday night as soon as we arrived and return it on Sunday night after Mammoth Cave to save an extra day on the car rental fees. After all, our hotel did have a free shuttle to the airport. Saving wins!

Doing your due diligence and comparing prices and dates definitely helps when planning your trip. Dont be afraid to cancel and rebook as many times as you can in order to get the best prices, especially if it is free cancellation .

Theoretically, you can get around Louisville without renting a car if you opt to Uber or Lyft or cab your way around. However, since the car rental was only $41.87 for two days plus gas, its not that expensive. It may make sense if you only plan to do the Downtown and nearby areas though since you will probably need to pay for parking in the downtown area.

Explore The Awesome Caverns

Louisville Mega Cavern is an enormous man-made cavern that can be explored from a mega tram that goes deep into the Earth. It is a 17-mile green-building technology that allows space for storage, mining, recycling, underneath the city, and is the first of its kind in the world.

Mega Cavern features ropes challenge course, cavern ziplining , and motorbike paths for the more active travelers. A newer option is the funderground adventure by E-bike, where you can bike in the only underground bike attraction in the country.

Taylor and I both loved visiting the unique Mega Cavern. The tour operators are entertaining be sure to tip them!

If Your Ideal Date Involves Watching The Sunset

Nothing is more romantic than watching a good sunset. And one thing about Louisville that Ive never quite understood is that it has THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS in the WHOLE FREAKIN WORLD. It really does, though.

I mean, weve seen some amazing sunsets in our lives. But for whatever reason, the Louisville sunsets are just above and beyond on like, a consistent basis. Is it something to do with the Ohio River Valley? Is it related to the fact that our drinking water is also the best in the country?

I have no idea, but in my opinion, some of the best dates in Louisville are just the simple and powerful act of watching the sunset.

Watch The Sunset From Above

Heather~Renee on Great Day Live in Louisville Ky.

Louisville has tons of great places to view its weirdly beautiful sunsets, whether youre on a bridge or the waters edge. But what about taking in the sunset from up above? Say, on a roof? Or the top of a hotel?? Yep, Louisvilles got a few of those, too! Take your date high above the city to appreciate Louisville from a new perspective.

  • 8UP Elevated Drinkery & Kitchen is Louisvilles best rooftop bar, complete with fire pits, cozy seating, and stunning views of downtown Louisville. Dine inside and then take your drinks outdoors to watch the sunset.
  • Located on the 25th floor of one of Louisvilles most iconic hotels, the Galt House, Swizzle is the perfect restaurant for taking in 360-degree sunset views over downtown Louisville and the Ohio River. I mean 360-degrees literally, by the way: the restaurant rotates as you eat, so youll catch the best views in Louisville no matter where youre seated!
  • Swizzle isnt the only place to catch stunning views of the Ohio River from the top of the Galt House. Head up to Al Js for drinks overlooking the river. Youll be sharing the bar with a giant aquarium, so dont be surprised if some fish friends photo-bomb your romantic selfie. Also, if youre curious, this bar is in no way related to one of our favorite bands, Alt-J. We checked.

Things To Do To Celebrate Fall In Louisville Kentucky

Halloween is my FAVORITE holiday, so I might be biased, but I think Halloween season is the best of the year in Louisville ! Fall in Louisville, KY, means crunchy colorful leaves, crisp breezy air, pumpkin picking, and bourbon tasting.

And Halloween in Louisville is a month-long celebration, with an amazing Jack-O-Lantern immersive art experience, terrifying haunted houses filled with way-too-realistic professional actors wielding chainsaws and/or actual legit ghosts, and an incredibly charming Halloween party at the Louisville Zoo.

Then theres the crisp autumn air and crunchy colorful leaves, the unique fall festivals and events, spooky ghost tours, and gorgeous hikes through some of the most beautiful fall foliage in the USA. Fall in Louisville is pretty freakin awesome, yall.

Theres nothing like drinking hot apple cider as you walk through miles of flickering candle-lit works of pumpkin art before scaring yourself silly at a haunted house. Heres the ultimate list of things to do during fall in Louisville!

Do Boo At The Zoo With The Kids

Boo at the Zoo has been Louisville Zoos signature fall event for more than 40 years, but as one might guess, trick-or-treating amid an ongoing pandemic can be, well, extra tricky. Just like last year, the event is going down with safety procedures in place. Special tickets are required for all guests aged three and up, and entry gets you a full evening of fun by way of character meet-and-greets, trick-or-treating for kids 11 and under, live music, free onsite parking, and reduced nightly capacity to lessen traffic delays.

See Folk Art In Kentuckys Folk Art Center

Located on the campus of Morehead State University, the Kentucky Folk Art Center is housed in an old grocery store. The best part of this free attraction is that it really supports local artists. The permanent collection includes nearly 1,400 pieces of self-taught art. Dont miss the annual Appalachian Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair, held on the first Saturday of December. The museum is temporarily closed due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Attend The Worlds Largest Halloween Party

During the month of October, the Louisville Zoo hosts the worlds largest Halloween party each night from 5-8:30 PM!

The adorably named Boo at the Zoo transforms the Louisville Zoo into a living storybook, with characters brought to life, music, and trick-or-treating for kids 11 and under. Its all kooky Halloween fun and none of the spooky perfect for little ones.

Keep an eye out for the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow, your favorite princesses and superheroes, the Spooktacular Carousel, Mumpkin the Giant Talking Pumpkin, and the not-so-itsy-bitsy Spider House.

Appreciate Louisvilles Incredible Theatre Scene

Ive mentioned it before several times but Louisville has an incredible theater scene. Not only has the city produced Hollywood actors such as Jennifer Lawrence who I actually studied theater with in middle school! she doesnt remember me Ashley Judd, Jennifer Carpenter, and Tom Cruise, but the independent Louisville acting scene is thriving.

Most theater aficionados have heard of the world famous Humana Festival of New Plays in April or Kentucky Shakespeare, which performs free Shakespeare in Central Park during the summer and, incidentally, is the longest-running free Shakespeare festival in the country and also THE BEST ONE. But Louisville actually produces excellent theater year-round! To flesh out a romantic evening, start with dinner before the show and end with post-show drinks at one of Louisvilles best bars or a nearby speakeasy.

To see whats playing, pick up an LEO Weekly or check out some of my favorite local theater companies and venues:

Go On A Haunted Walking Tour Of Old Louisville

Old Louisville is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of Louisville .

The streets are lined with massive old trees and the largest collection of historical Victorian homes in the world. A walk through this historic neighborhood in autumn is the best way to fully absorb the fall colors and see some truly incredible Halloween lawn displays.

As you explore blocks of gorgeous, mansion-esque Victorian homes, you can uncover the chilling stories of their former inhabitants: bourbon barons, racetrack royalty, and tobacco titans in the booming 1800s. Thats right, Old Louisville is one of the most haunted places in Louisville! You can get all of the spine-tingling details on the Old Louisville Ghost Tour.
