Sample The South In The Blue Door Smokehouse

Source: kentucky

Nowhere are the barbeque smells and smokes better than at Blue Door a highly-rated, stripped-down American BBQ diner on Walton Ave.

Here, the menu offers up platters of pulled pork and smoked sausage, combo dishes of brisket and authentic smoked racks of ribs the list of southern staples goes on and on!

Service is simple, while the chocolate fudge brownies are to-die-for!

How Breath Helps Reduce Stress And Anxiety

Top 5 best things to do in Kentucky

Did you know that breathing techniques can quickly help you to release stress and lower your anxiety?

Breathing techniques improve circulation and blood flow to the brain, and activate our parasympathetic nervous system, which means that our brain gets the message to relax. For example, doing the alternate breathing activates the left and right hemispheres of the brain. When balance is created between the two hemispheres, we feel less stressed and anxious, and more relaxed.

In this free workshop you will already learn a technique that you can practice daily to feel calm, centered and stress-free!

Fort Boonesborough State Park

One of the best family-friendly places to visit near Lexington is Fort Boonesborough State Park. This historic fort dates from 1775. Wonderfully recreated from the original plans, the fort today is a snapshot in time from the 18th century. Kids will love the costumed docents as they go about daily life using historical items from the time period.

In addition to the fort, the state park also has a giant pool with a splash pad area for children, an ideal place to cool down on those hot, humid Kentucky summer days. The park also has a miniature golf course, walking trails, a museum, and a 166-site campground.

The green space around the fort and the trees nearby provide an excellent habitat for birds. Keep an eye out for wild turkeys roaming about, and listen carefully for the tell-tale knocking of pileated woodpeckers.

The park is about a 40-minute drive southeast of Lexington.

The Monroe Moosnick Medical And Science Museum

Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum

The Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum is one of the most unique things to do in Lexington.

This makes it one of the best for those who want something slightly more unorthodox and fun for their trip.

Its open only by appointment, so arrange your trip in advance!

The museum is named after a late chemistry professor from Transylvania University who worked at the institution for an impressive fifty years.

Its packed with medical instruments and paraphernalia that date back to the 1700s and 1800s.

Though they look extremely out-of-this-world and resemble something from science fiction now, they were the peak of modern medical technology back in their time.

A lot of the instruments are accompanied by features designed to teach you some basic concepts of physics, chemistry, and biology.

These features include botanical diagrams and anatomical models.

A lot of these were purchased between the years 1820 and 1850 in places like Paris and London, then brought to Transylvania University for the medical students.

One of the most interesting pieces at this museum is a life-sized wax figure called Medical Venus, which is a dissectible female figure made by casting 200 cadavers for tissue and organ models.

Another interesting piece is a hairball from a buffalos stomach that spans 14 inches.

The kicker?

The hairball was given to Transylvania University by Mary Todd Lincolns youngest brother, George Rogers Clark Todd.
