Check Out The Lake Placid Olympic Sites

There are a few spots near the town where you can feel the history and the excitement of the Olympic Games, as Lake Placid has hosted on two separate occasions. There are five separate locations with even more attractions spread around the town, Whiteface Mountain, and Mount Van Hoevenburg. Here is the rundown:

Olympic Jumping Complex

Both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics were hosted in Lake Placid, and the most memorable event of that time was downhill skiing at Whiteface Mountain.

The Olympic Jumping Complex is home to both 90 and 120 meter jumps for distance jumping, the aerial and mogul hill, and summer training facilities. If youre lucky, you could catch sight of a summer training session happening on the hill or on one of the small sidehills, with athletes jumping into the pool first to perfect their tricks.

Some days, you can take the gondolas to the top of the hill. Other days, you may need to catch a ride on a shuttle. Both ways, you will end up at an elevator to take you up to the top of the 120-meter ski jump tower. From the top of the jump, you get to experience the view that Olympic ski jumpers see just before launching themselves off the ramp in an effort to take home the gold!

Bobsled Experience at Mount Van Hoevenberg

The bobsled run at Mount Van Hoevenberg was where the worlds best competed in both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Luge and skeleton events were also held here!

The Best Lake Placid Resorts And Hotels

There is no lack of great hotels in Lake Placid. But its a popular Adirondack destination, so things book up quickly. Especially the most popular Lake Placid resorts.

We stayed at Wildwood on-the-lake. This great destination features a motel-style set up out front, but it also boasts a cottage-like-feel. We loved the lake-fed pool at the front of the resort and the free access to kayaks, SUPs, and canoes for exploring Lake Placid. It was such a perfect place for kayaking that C taught himself to kayak by himself there!

Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort is also one of the best Lake Placid resorts for families and couples. They are lakeside with incredible views. And the on-site restaurant Generations is one of the most popular places to eat in Lake Placid. Check their availability here.

Take A Day Trip To Another Lake

Popular day trips from Lake Placid include visiting some other lakes in the area. These include Saranac Lake, Lake George, and Tupper Lake.

Saranac Lake is an amazing place to visit, especially in the summer! There is no shortage of beautiful views: from the water to the mountains, from gardens and green spaces to historic buildings. Youll find something for everyone here!

Lake George is a beautiful and scenic spot in upstate New York. Its been used for a few films, too. Lake George was also the site of one of Americas most famous naval battles-the Battle of Lake George, an important battle in the French and Indian War. A little more accessible and also a little more on the touristy side, its still a beautiful destination lake.

Tupper Lake is also a popular lake in the Adirondacks for outdoor activities, and there are plenty of things to do nearby. Youll find trails for hiking, biking, and snowshoeing-perfect for all abilities. The lake also offers some great fishing opportunities just be sure to get a license first because its strictly enforced by the state. If water sports are more your style-swimming or kayaking -Tupper Lake might be the place for you.

Snowshoeing + Cross Country Skiing

The millions of flat hiking trails spread out across the Adirondack Park keep snowshoers and cross-country skiers very busy in the winter. One of the best places for these leisure sports was Cascade X-C Ski, but they were recently acquired by the Adirondack Mountain Club.

Mt. Van Hoevenberg offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. If you plan on visiting often, you can also buy a season pass with them here.

For a quieter trail, the VIC Center in Paul Smiths is a hidden winter gem with 40K of groomed trails ranging in difficulty among a stunning winter backdrop.

Moderate: Golden Arrow Resort

For this visit, we spent four nights at the family-friendly Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort. You could immediately tell that this is a favorite destination hotel for families, many of which return every year. The Golden Arrow occupies a prime location at the end of Mirror Lake and in the heart of the downtown shopping and restaurant district.

The small private beach at the Golden Arrow is another huge draw for families, especially since they offer free use of kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and rowboats. Of course, that small beach can get quite crowded, and finding a spot is a challenge. I would recommend bringing your own beach chairs and staking out a space on the lawn. Also, the equipment is a bit hit or miss with a first come, first serve policy and a mismatch of paddles and heavily used equipment.

Another nice thing about the Golden Arrow is the availability of two-room suites for families, some of which have kitchenettes. The rooms themselves could use some updating but the size is nice and the view and location make those trade-offs worthwhile.

Visit High Fall Gorge

High Fall Gorge is a beautiful place in Adirondacks where you can admire the majestic waterfalls cascading over rocks from the viewpoints along the trail path. We visited in summers and loved the greenery around the area. In Autumn, you will see waterfalls on the backdrop of fall foliage and in Winters you will find frozen waterfalls something I would love to see.

Checkout their website for season updates and pricing details. They have a cute cafe & gift shop take a look before heading back.
